Jennae Edwards Johnson Smout died in Bountiful, Utah September 20, 2017 at the age of 81. She was born November 5, 1935 to John Jennings and Effie Cutler Edwards in Logan, Utah. She is preceded in death by her first husband Major A.K. Johnson, her second husband Chief Master Sergeant Parley "Chuck" Smout, and one grandchild, Megan Greene. She is survived by her three children: Scott Johnson of Salt Lake City, Tracy Johnson (Bruce Stone) of Farmington, and Brian Johnson (Haley) of Atlanta. She is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
As the youngest of three children and the great-granddaughter of a Martin Handcart pioneer, (Marion Eliza Sermon), it should come as no surprise that Jennae was a pioneer herself. A girl of the 40's, Jennae loved to learn new things and was particularly good at sports. She belonged to a bowling league, regularly played golf, and liked to ski!
As a young woman of the 50's, Jennae graduated from Logan High School with the class of 1953. She continued her education when she applied and was accepted to St. Mark's School of Nursing in Salt Lake City. During her years at St. Mark's, she was trained as a surgical nurse and was the starting pitcher for her fast-pitch softball team. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1956.
Shortly after graduation, Jennae married Air Force pilot, A.K. Johnson, of Hyrum. Military orders provided them with adventure. They were stationed at Tachikawa AFB near Tokyo, Japan; Hill AFB, Utah; and finally, at McCord AFB in Tacoma, Washington. During that time, they had three children and Jennae turned her attention to motherhood and the demands of being an active Air Force wife. After her husband retired, they returned home to Utah. Jennae went to work as a nurse for the American Red Cross and eventually became a director for the Intermountain Region blood banks.
In her later years, Jennae married her second husband, Chuck Smout and spent time traveling and playing golf. She was particularly fond of Hawaii. Her family and friends will remember her as a talented cook and a friendly, gracious hostess.
A viewing will be held at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful from 5pm-6pm on Sunday, September 24, 2017. A graveside service is scheduled for 11am on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the Logan Cemetery. All are welcome. Flowers and condolences can be sent to funeral home.
