Jerry E. Dyer, 77, of Farmington, UT, passed away with his family by his side, after a short bout with cancer, December 9, 2013.
He was born May 23, 1936, to Ivon H. Dyer and Eltha Johnson Dyer in Havre, MT. Jerry grew up as the second of two boys in northern Idaho, where his parents instilled in him the qualities of hard work and competitive drive, that would be his defining characteristics throughout his life. Naturally, Jerry was drawn to sports and loved to play basketball, baseball and football. Jerry graduated from Plummer High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Idaho, where he played basketball.
He was married to Lorraine Carlisle, April 10, 1964. They were married for forty-nine years. They are the proud parents of two children: Brandon (Jodie) Dyer and Cami (Ryan) Mounteer. His 7 grandchildren were a source of immense pride and the light of his life. Jerry was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and he enjoyed telling everyone around him of their accomplishments.
After graduating from college, Jerry moved to Northern Utah where he worked in the engineering field of the solid propellant rocket propulsion industry. Jerry always said, he was an engineer by education and an entrepreneur by profession. After eight years in the engineering field, Jerry left and entered the business world where he worked, organized, and established several small businesses. In 1982, he cofounded and was the CEO of TransTel Communications, Inc (TelAmerica and ExpressTel), headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT. With the 1982 decision by the Department of Justice to break up the long distance telecommunications industry, Jerry and his business partner led TransTel through a period of tremendous growth and rapid expansion providing long distance services in five states.
Under Jerry’s leadership, TransTel Communications was a profitable corporation for an impressive 247 consecutive months.
Jerry spent many hours boating at Lake Powell, which was a favorite pastime of his. Jerry and Lorraine enjoyed traveling and visited all parts of the world.
Jerry will be greatly missed by his family and friends, especially for his quick mind, sharp wit and his “Dyerisms.” He is survived by his wife Lorraine, their two children: Brandon (Jodie) and Cami (Ryan) and by his brother Mel (Barbara) Dyer of Port Townsend, WA. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivon and Eltha Dyer.
