Jerry crossed the veil into the arms of his loving Heavenly Father while sleeping peacefully at home at the age of 81.
Jerry was born on February 16, 1935 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the only child of Coy Melburn Edgmon and Sarah Jean Welch. When he was a young child his family moved to Long Beach, California. He met his college sweetheart, Carol Dalton while attending Long Beach City College. They were married on September 7, 1957 and later sealed as an eternal family with their five children in the Los Angeles Temple on March 24, 1978. Jerry and Carol shared many happy memories together while living in Fortuna, Point Magu, Long Beach, and Cypress, California, and then later in Bountiful, Utah.
Jerry graduated from San Jose State University and was then drafted into the military where he attended Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. After four years of serving as an Officer in the U.S. Navy, he was accepted into USC Law School on a scholarship and earned his Doctorate of Law degree, graduating with honors. He practiced law at the law firm of Allen, Wilson, George and Edgmon in Long Beach, California. He continued his legal practice with his son, Jered, in Bountiful, Utah for many years. Jerry became very active in the community serving in many different leadership positions including President and State Director of the Long Beach Junior Chamber of Commerce, President of the Century Club, President of the California State University 49ers Athletic Foundation, and on the Board of Directors for both the Elks Club and Long Beach Memorial Hospital. He was also on the Board of Directors and Legal Council for California Special Olympics as well as being actively involved with the inauguration of the Long Beach Grand Prix.
Although he was considered to be very successful in the community, he always said his greatest accomplishment in life was his family. Jerry was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, brother-in-law, and uncle, as well as a loving mentor to many. He was greatly loved and will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor, strength of character, selflessness and dedication to his family. Jerry was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many capacities.
Jerry is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 59 years, Carol, and his five loving children: Kimberly (Steven) Wilmarth, Stacy (Rob) Watkins, Kristen Edgmon, Kreg (Maryn) Edgmon and Jered (Jennifer) Edgmon. He has 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
