Jesse Dee Manfull 1933-2011
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle slipped through the veil on Sunday, May 29, 2011. He was born on May 21, 1933 to Albert Henry Manfull and Eva Bertha Burningham in Bountiful, Utah. Jesse was the second child in this family, however he was raised by Eva and William Aird. He attended school at Stoker Elementary, South Davis Jr. High and Davis High School graduating in 1951. Following high school Jess was drafted into the Army and took his basic training at Ft. Ord, California. Just as he finished this training the war in Korea ended and he was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington driving an Army truck for two years. Jesse served an LDS Mission to the Navajos during the years of 1956-1957. Working at Chinle, St. Michaels, Ganado, Klagetoh and Wide Ruin AZ. He learned to love the people and the desert. With two other elders he helped translate the missionary discussions into Navajo. Jesse attended BYU where he studied Latin and English. He earned a B.A. and received a certificate to teach in the secondary school. He married Barbara J. England on June 8, 1962. She was also a teacher and during the summers Jess laid brick fro Don Bangerter and then built his own home on South Davis Blvd. according to Barbaras designs. Jess was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His daily study of the Book of Mormon led him to works by Hugh Nibley. Added to these scholarly works Jess taught English at Viewmont High School. His students learned the classics and the arts of writing. After retiring from teaching, he tutored students at Bench Mark Hospital. Because of his love of music, he and Barbara sang the Messiah with the South Davis Community Choir, he eventually became President of the Choir. His service to the Choir was added to his work in the Church as a Cub Master, a Seventies Group Leader and he taught many insightful lessons to the High Priests of the Bountiful 23rd Ward. Jess spent his retired years traveling with Barbara. He loved to study the landscape with Davis School In Service division. He was an avid rock collector and enjoyed his lapidary tools. In 1988 Jesse and Barbara traveled to Israel with the South Davis Community Choir singing Elijah and LDS Hymns at a varitey of venues. In November of 2003 Jesse and Barbara were called to serve in the Arizona Phoenix Mission and worked in Tuba City, AZ until December of 2004. Also, this couple worked a Service Mission at Deseret Mills in Kaysville for two years. They were released in February of 2011. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, James England, his son James McKay Manfull. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, his sons, Merrill (Jill), Matthew (Jill) Manfull, and a daughter, Melanie Reeves (Adam). Also surviving are grandchildren: Megan, Mason and McKenna Manfull, Colin, Cole and Cameron Reeves, Chad, Chelsea, Morgan, Madison, Tanner and Louisa Hall. Brothers, Richard (Elaine) Manfull, William Aird Jr. (Marcia), Mark (Debbie) Aird, and Sister Barbara Lefevre. Funeral services will be held at11:00 am, Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the Bountiful 28th Ward, 2285 South 200 West, Bountiful, Utah. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday evening at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 N. Main, and from 10:00-11:00 am on Saturday at the church prior to services.
