Joan Vivian Hansen Young, age 89, returned home to our Heavenly Father on December 23, 2018 with her loving family by her side.
An angel here on earth, Joan was born on February 19, 1929, in Ogden, Utah to Nellie VanderSchuit Hansen and Norman Edwin Hansen. Joan was an only child and dearly loved by both her parents. She has felt this love her entire life. Joan's childhood was a happy one, filled with many activities: school, church, and participating in programs with singing, dancing, and playing the piano. She graduated from Ogden High School and attended Weber State College. She worked for the Forest Service as a dispatcher while waiting for her college sweetheart, L. Richard Young, who was serving in the Central Pacific Mission. Upon his return, Joan and Richard were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 15, 1950. She dearly loved Richard, her children, and her family.
From the young age of four years old, Joan could be found at the piano – she was both musically and artistically talented. Joan had an incredible ability to play everything from simple nursery rhymes, show tunes, jazz, to any of the complex classical repertoire – music filled her home! Under her direction, her children would sing and act the parts of the von Trapp children from the Sound of Music; her grandchildren would march around the living room to Disney tunes; she deeply admired Norwegian composer and pianist, Edvard Grieg and everyone would beg her to play "In The Hall Of The Mountain King"; along with Moonlight In Vermont, Happy Christmas Little Friend, Rhapsody In Blue, Clair De Lune, the glissando of "Tiger Rag" (Hold That Tiger), Davy Crockett (for David), any many, many more. She was a valued piano teacher to friends and family for many years.
Joan excelled at all she undertook. While in school, she had a passion for fashion design. Her innate ability for drawing and painting allowed her self-expression. She had an incredible aesthetic eye. She was a great cook, homemaker, seamstress, and enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She skillfully made matching daughter and mother Easter and Christmas outfits and as Mrs. Claus she made children's clothes, pajamas, and doll clothes. She made quilts and afghans for each of her children to present as a wedding gift. She was extremely literate; any spelling or grammatical question was easily answered.
Her business skill was as beautiful as her art. Typing as well as self-taught computer skills allowed her to work both in (while raising her children) and out of the home. She proficiently took and transcribed shorthand and eagerly took down baby blessings, confirmations, etc. to surprise friends and family with a sacred record. Joan was always giving and was eager to be of service to family, friends, and neighbors.
The gospel was always an important part of her life. Joan lovingly served in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Joan and Richard served an LDS Orlando, Florida Temple Mission together and served together in the Bountiful, Utah Temple as ordinance workers from its dedication until the fall of 2001.
Joan is survived by five children: Cathy Young, Carol Emery (Jim), David Young (Renee), Karen Newman (Jim), and Diane Palmer (Chris); 18 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren (with one on the way); and 1 great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her cherished father and mother; husband, L. Richard Young; daughter, Susan Joan Young-Ure; son, Brent Richard Young; twin sons; and a tiny baby. Since she was an only child, she said she wanted ten children, which she accomplished and cherished.
The entire Young family would like to express our deepest appreciation to Karen, Jim, and family for making their home in Rexburg Joan's home for the past few years. She has felt comfortable, safe, well-cared for, and loved.
Funeral services will be held 11:00, Saturday, December 29th, 2018 at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful where a viewing will be held Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning 9:30-10:30 prior to services. Interment – Centerville City Cemetery.
