Biography

Joel Peck Gold, 94 years, passed away on April 21, 2014 in Bountiful, Utah. He was born on April 11, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Cyrus William and Annie Alazana Peck Gold. He was their last child, as his mother, Annie, died five days later. Soon after, his father married Edith Annie Benfell, who became Joel’s loving mother. He was raised in Salt Lake City with 13 siblings: Lucile Gold Oliphant (Arden), Verniece Gold Rosenvall (Albert), Cyrus Gold (Margaret & Lorena), Everett Gold (Thelma), Josephine Gold Knudsen (Alvin), Milton Gold (Linnie), Geneve Gold Quist (Lowell), Ardella Gold Jensen (Merton), Wayne Gold (Helen & Ila), Stanley Gold (Lynn), Gladys Joy Gold Van de Merwe (John), Barbara Gold Weight (Leon Weight & Keith Russell), and Lettie Gold Foote Starkey (Len Foote & John Starkey).

As a young man, Joel served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Western States Mission. He married Nellie Smith White in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on October 25, 1944. They raised their family in Utah (Salt Lake City, Taylorsville, Fruit Heights, Centerville), and California (Hayward). Joel and Nellie served on three LDS missions together. Joel lived his faith and served faithfully in the LDS Church as a home teacher, a Bishop, Stake Presidency counselor, Scout Master, Stake Mission President, advisor, and others. He shared his testimony and love of the restored gospel and the Book Mormon with everyone in his life.

He and Nellie are the parents of 10 children: Darrell “D” Gold (Linda), Layton, UT; JoLene Gold Gibb (Dave), Gilbert, AZ; LaVell Gold (John Himes), Minneapolis, MN; Harley Gold (Linda), Kearns, UT; Glenn Parker (Carolie), Farmington, UT; Cordell Gold (Nina), Kaysville, UT; Merris Gold-Drew (Bob), San Diego, CA; Wesley Gold (Sharon), Centerville, UT; Ralph Gold (Julie), Clearfield, UT; and Millen Gold (Kishell), Layton, UT. He has 47 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. His beloved Nellie died on May 4, 2002

In 2002, Joel married Roma Elizabeth Park Jaques. Roma has five children and 17 grandchildren. Roma and Joel lived in Hurricane, UT and Centerville, UT. They served an LDS mission together and kept busy with their family, church and home activities.

Joel loved being a salesman. He worked for an envelope specialty company for 22 years, traveling all over Utah and Eastern Idaho selling to businesses. Then, he made a lifetime career change into life insurance. He loved being a life insurance agent for Beneficial Life Insurance (for over 40 years) and for Protective Life Insurance (for over 30 years). He was passionate about selling life insurance (even into his 90s), serving the future needs of families. He loved the personal touch, working with people.

More than anything, Joel loved his large family: parents, siblings, spouses, in-laws, children, grandchildren, and all their families. He felt blessed beyond measure to be surrounded with such great people in his long life. Joel is survived by his wife, Roma, his three sisters (Gladys, Barbara, and Lettie), his 10 children, and their families.
