John Richard Gabbott died of esophageal cancer on August 16, 2014. He was born October 21, 1949 in Bountiful, Utah to John Donald and Mabel Jones Gabbott. He grew up in Bountiful and graduated from Bountiful High School in 1967. He married Anna Rae Benham June 13, 1981, later divorced.
After his father’s death in 1976 John took over his wholesale picture frame and supply business, traveling throughout the Intermountain West, and was very successful. He was a born salesman, handsome and charming.
John loved motorcycles, especially Harley Davidsons. He and Anna Rae enjoyed many adventures as they traveled on his top-of-the-line Harley. He had special memories of riding to the motorcycle rally at Sturgis, North Dakota.
In 1992, John rode his bike to a store near his home and was hit by a driver making an illegal left turn. He lost almost everything in that one moment. He was in a coma for three months and many months in rehab. His wife, Anna Rae, did a wonderful job getting him to the point where he could take care of himself physically, but he had traumatic brain damage and was not able to work. He also had acute aphasia and had a very hard time communicating. In 1998 he moved in with his sister, Cheryl Gabbott in the family home in Bountiful. Cheryl watched after him until his death.
John is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sisters Cheryl Lea Gabbott and Sue Ellen Dewey (David); brothers, W. Geoffrey Gabbott (Margo) and Steven Bernard Gabbott; and step-daughters, Haleina Muir and Zabrina Barton.
The family would like to thank the wonderful people at the Rocky Mountain Hospice, especially Tracy Rosenhans and Robert Chandler, for doing so much for John in his difficult last days. We would also like to thank the North Canyon Care center for their help. Special thanks goes to neighbor Merlin Barlow for being such a good friend to John.
