John Storton Smith

January 26, 1930 — February 4, 2016

John  Storton Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by all his children on Thursday, February 04, 2016 due to causes incident to age.  Born January 26, 1930 to Edwin Woodruff and Ethel Akert Smith.  He graduated from Granite High School in 1948 and served an LDS mission to the Eastern States Mission.  He served his country in Company A of the 63rd Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Ord, California.  He married Faye Bennion, May 28, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.  She passed away January 28, 2001.  He graduated from BYU with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Architecture in 1957.  He founded J&L Garden Center, Bountiful, Utah in January of 1958.  He designed and landscaped (working side by side with his family)  projects that included LDS Temples and Chapels, local businesses including the original Kentucky Fried Chicken in Salt Lake City, buildings at the University of Utah, Weber State, Utah State, the VA Hospital, St. Marks Hospital, and many homes across the valley.  His legacy lives on with his business and family.  He willingly served in many church callings including Bountiful Temple Ordinance Worker with his sweetheart.  He is survived by his children: ReNae Call (Glen); Gary (Brenda); Sharon Anderson; Duane (Marilyn); Maurine Newhall (Bob); Gordon (Kris); Craig (Kristin); Alan (Diane); Mary Anne Sorenson (Scott); 42 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren.  Brothers, Raymond (Jean); Robert (Carol); Albert (Norine); sister-in-law, Kaye Smith.  He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 2 sisters, 3 brothers; son, Vaughn; son-in-law, Gary Washburn; grandson, Kent Smith; great granddaughter, Eleanor Cummings; grandson-in-law, Eric Holbrook.
A viewing will be held Sunday, February 7, 2016 from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Bountiful 43rd Ward, 100 West 1000 North, Bountiful, Utah. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 8, 2016 at the church, with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.  
The family would like to thank First Choice Hospice – Amanda, Allison, Tom, and Wayne for their loving care of our dad.
