John Wallace Gwynn

May 30, 1940 — July 15, 2021

Dr. John Wallace Gwynn of Bountiful, Utah, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2021. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on May 30, 1940, to Raymond Alfred Gwynn and Rosabelle Streeper Gwynn. Wally was sealed to Carol Lynn Gwynn in the Salt Lake City Temple on September 20, 1963. They will always be the parents of five children.

Wally received both his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mineralogy from the University of Utah. After graduating in 1970 he spent most of his career working with the Great Salt Lake as a saline minerals geologist with the Utah Geological Survey. Wally is the author of numerous publications dealing with Utah’s natural resources. Published topics include: bituminous sandstones of the P.R. Springs area, oil-well brines of the Uinta and Paradox basins, subsurface brines of Sever Lake, low-temperature geothermal resources along the Wasatch Front, and brines and mineral resources of the Great Salt Lake.

Wally loves the gospel of Jesus Christ and strived every day to exhibit patience, kindness, and faith. He had a way to quickly turn a stranger into a friend. He was a very hard-working man that put family and friends before himself. Despite a major accident just prior to his wedding, he has truly lived a life that beat all odds that were against him. He served in multiple capacities that impacted the lives of many people both in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and out. He was a wonderful individual that any person would be lucky to be able model their lives after.

He is survived by his wife of 57-years, Carol, two daughters and three sons: Christine (Lee) Miller, Eileen Gwynn, John (Marie) Gwynn, Robert (Emily) Gwynn, and Richard (Melissa) Gwynn. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Aubrey Gwynn, Brayden Gwynn, Devin Gwynn, Emma Gwynn, Ethan Gwynn, Hyrum Gwynn, Joseph Gwynn, Kaylee Gwynn, Megan Miller, Nolan Gwynn, Sandy Miller, and Savannah Gwynn. He is also survived by his sister Adele Gwynn. He is also survived by individuals and families that he considers to be an extension of his family. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Merrill Gwynn.
