Johnnie Hughes

December 22, 1921 — December 21, 2014

Johnnie Frances Hinton Hughes passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 21, 2014.

She was born to John and Mary Hinton on December 22, 1921 in Dacula, Georgia.
She spent her childhood there with her sister, Jean and her brother, Jim. Johnnie graduated from Dacula High School and continued with college. She later attended calculator school. She married Lloyd Safford Hughes on June 18, 1943. Lloyd and Johnnie joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on March 4, 1946. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 13, 1947. After their baptisms, their desire was to serve the Lord full time and their prayers were answered when they were hired to do microfilming for the Genealogical Society for the church. This job took them to New Jersey and Connecticut where they made many lasting friendships. After microfilming, Lloyd and Johnnie settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. They owned and ran the Hobby Printing Press.

Johnnie loved gardening and always had a garden full of fruits, vegetables and flowers. She loved making miniature flower arrangements and gave them to those she loved.

Johnnie also loved sewing and throughout her lifetime taught many others to sew. Johnnie’s life was one of service. She spent many hours contributing to humanitarian efforts as she made quilts, pajamas, dresses and various other items donated to those in need. She had many callings in her lifetime, including ward historian, relief society president and primary secretary at age 88. Johnnie also attended the temple every Friday for many years to participate in temple sealings.

Johnnie was a friend to all and was loved by all. She will be missed by those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her sister, Jean Sparrow and nieces and nephews, her son in law, Joe Wright and her grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Granite Tabernacle, 2005 S. 900 E., Salt Lake City, Utah at 11:00 am. A viewing will be held that morning beginning at 9:45 am. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com.
