Jose Alberto Castillo Saldarriaga (Tole)

Jose Castillo (62), courageously battled cancer for over 6 years and passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and 5 children.

Jose, commonly known as “Tole” by his family and close friends, was the son of Jose Alberto Castillo Chavez and Rene Saldarriaga Requena. Husband of Consuelo C. Castillo. He was born in Piura, Peru where he grew up and lived for 42 years. He attended San Miguel High School and enjoyed many things including being a musician, airplane pilot, and a leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 1976, Jose became the youngest commercial small aircraft pilot in of all Peru at age 17. He served in the Peruvian Air Force in 1977 and served a religious mission for the Church in Arequipa-Peru from 1979 to 1981.

He met the love of his life Consuelo when he was 18 years old. They were married on December 4, 1981 and were sealed for time and all eternity in the Santiago Chile Temple on January 18, 1984. Together they raised 5 wonderful children and taught them to love their Savior Jesus Christ and His Gospel.

Jose worked for Electronoroeste in Peru. He was a dedicated employee for almost 20 years.

He served in many callings for the Church including Bishop, Stake Counselor, and Stake President during a span of 15 years.

He had a special gift for playing the Piano – he could play anything he heard by ear. He began playing when he was 5 years old. He performed at many events including weddings, restaurants and social gatherings. The beautiful way he played touched the hearts of many. One of the last things he did was play a favorite hymn for his favorite audience of one–his wife Consuelo

He moved to the United States in September 2001 acting as a pioneer for the Castillo family. His family joined him in 2002. They lived in Woods Cross, Utah since 2003.

Jose worked at South Davis Community Hospital for over 10 years. He was always looking for ways to go above and beyond in caring for his elderly patients. He was known for his compassionate, dedicated service.

Along with serving his fellow man, his greatest joy was in serving the Lord. Jose and Consuelo were temple workers for 2 years beginning in 2014.  They then served a three-year mission at the Temple View Branch in the Salt Lake Inner City Mission beginning in 2016.

Jose joined a nonprofit organization called Alliance for International Medicine (AIM) thanks to the Doctors he met while working at IHC. They decided to go to his home town Piura, Peru to support people in need. He was proud of being a part of that group and grateful for the opportunity to return to his home town in such a way.

If you knew Jose, you know he had a great sense of humor. Even in his last days he would find a way to make his family laugh with his jokes. He was always optimistic, loving and the peacemaker in the family.  His quiet gentle strength was a grounding force everywhere he went.

Jose had a deep testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He led by example and loved giving advice to others whenever he had the chance.

A special thanks to his work friends at Intermountain Health Care where he worked for 9 years. They were gracious enough to gift him a beautiful Piano with a plaque inside that says “Our Friend, Jose Castillo, who not only entertained many with his talent on the piano, but humbly served all those around him. You are an inspiration to us all”.

Another special thanks to his neighbors, leaders and friends from the 7^th Ward in Woods Cross, Utah. Thank you for always being there for our family and for caring for him until his last days.

Jose is survived by his 5 children and their spouses, Solana (Francisco) Astorga, Consuelo (Jordan) Rasmussen, Lucia Castillo, Claudia (Diego) Calle, and Jose Irvin Castillo; 8 grandchildren; brothers Israel and Elias Castillo; and his mother Rene Saldarriaga de Castillo.

He is now reunited with his father whom he loved so much, his childhood dog Chiquito and a host of family and friends who welcome him with open arms.

He will always be loved, forever missed and never forgotten.

A Public viewing will be held at Russon Bountiful Mortuary at 295 N. Main Street Bountiful, UT on Thursday October 7th from 6pm to 8 pm. Family viewing at 10 am and public funeral services at 11 am will be held on Friday October 8th at the Woods Cross 7th Ward, 2064 South 800 West, Woods Cross, Utah.

José Castillo (62), luchó valientemente contra el cáncer durante más de 6 años y falleció en paz rodeado de su esposa y 5 hijos.

José, comúnmente conocido como “Tole” por su familia y amigos cercanos, era hijo de José Alberto Castillo Chávez y René Saldarriaga Requena. Esposo de Consuelo C. Castillo. Nació en Piura, Perú donde creció y vivió durante 42 años. Asistió a la escuela secundaria San Miguel y disfrutó de muchas cosas como músico, piloto de avión y líder de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días.

En 1976, José se convirtió en el piloto de aviones pequeños comerciales más joven de todo el Perú a la edad de 17 años. Sirvió en la Fuerza Aérea Peruana en 1977 y sirvió en una misión religiosa para la Iglesia en Arequipa-Perú desde 1979 hasta 1981.

Conoció al amor de su vida Consuelo cuando tenía 18 años. Se casaron el 4 de diciembre de 1981 y fueron sellados por el tiempo y la eternidad en el Templo de Santiago de Chile el 18 de enero de 1984. Juntos criaron a cinco hijos maravillosos y les enseñaron a amar a su Salvador Jesucristo y Su Evangelio.

Además de servir a su prójimo, su mayor gozo era servir al Señor. José y Consuelo fueron obreros del templo durante 2 años a partir de 2014. Despues sirvieron una misión de tres años en la rama de Temple View en la Misión de Salt Lake Inner City a partir de 2016.

José se unió a una organización sin fines de lucro llamada Alliance for International Medicine (AIM) gracias a los médicos que conoció mientras trabajaba en IHC; luego decidieron ir a su ciudad natal, Piura, Perú, para apoyar a las personas necesitadas. Estaba orgulloso de ser parte de ese grupo y agradecido por la oportunidad de regresar a su ciudad natal de esa manera.

Si conocías a José, sabrías que tenía un gran sentido del humor. Incluso en sus últimos días encontraría la manera de hacer reír a su familia con sus bromas. Siempre fue optimista, cariñoso y pacificador en la familia. Su naturaleza tranquila y gentil fortaleció a todos a su alrededor.

José tenía un testimonio profundo del Evangelio de Jesucristo. Lideraba con el ejemplo y le encantaba dar consejos a los demás siempre que tenía la oportunidad.

Un agradecimiento especial a sus amigos de trabajo en Intermountain Health Care, donde trabajó durante 9 años. Tuvieron la gentileza de obsequiarle un hermoso Piano con una placa en su interior que dice “Nuestro Amigo, José Castillo, que no solo entretuvo a muchos con su talento en el piano, sino que sirvió humildemente a todos los que lo rodeaban. Eres una inspiración para todos nosotros”.

Otro agradecimiento especial a sus vecinos, líderes y amigos del 7th Ward en Woods Cross, Utah. Gracias por estar siempre ahí para nuestra familia y por cuidarlo hasta sus últimos días.

A José le sobreviven sus 5 hijos y sus cónyuges, Solana (Francisco) Astorga, Consuelo (Jordan) Rasmussen, Lucía Castillo, Claudia (Diego) Calle y José Irvin Castillo; 8 nietos; los hermanos Israel y Elías Castillo; y su madre René Saldarriaga de Castillo.

Ahora se reencuentra con su padre a quien tanto amaba, su perro de la infancia Chiquito y una gran cantidad de familiares y amigos que lo reciben con los brazos abiertos.

Siempre será amado, extrañado por siempre y nunca olvidado.

Una visita pública se llevará a cabo en Russon Bountiful Mortuary en 295 N. Main Street Bountiful, UT el jueves 7 de octubre de 6:00 pm a 8:00 pm. La visita familiar a las 10 am y los servicios funerarios publicos a las 11 am se llevarán a cabo el viernes 8 de octubre en Woods Cross 7th Ward, 2064 South 800 West, Woods Cross, Utah.
