Joseph Benzon

February 20, 1926 — August 25, 2012

Biography

Joseph Andrew Benzon (Grandpa Joe) passed away peacefully from natural causes in Davis Hospital, with his family by his side, on August 25, 2012 after only having to spend one night away from his home.
Joe was the 5th of 14 children and 1st son born to Joseph W. Benzon and Birdie Williamsen on February 20, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Melba Muir on November 1, 1947 and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on February 13, 1964. Joe and Melba resided in Woods Cross and Bountiful throughout their married years. Together they have 6 children: Cherrill (Kent) Galloway, Wayne (Janet) Benzon, Layne (Pam) Benzon, Jaylynn (Becky) Benzon, Joleene (David) Kooyman, and Bruce (Jana) Benzon. Melba passed away in 1972. Joe married Dorothy Rogers in 1984 and was sealed to her in the Bountiful Temple a year later. Dorothy has 3 children: Randy (Holly), Cliff, and Debra. Dorothy passed away in 2010.
Joe was a family man who had a great love for his brothers and sisters. He was so proud of his children, 32 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. He taught his children how to work and how to play. He loved all his tools and was a great example of building what you want and repairing what you need. He loved the outdoors and spent many quality hours fishing and hunting with his family, particularly his sons. He loved music and taught himself how to play the harmonica – which he played very well. He was famous for giving away candy bars at every visit and holiday. He was a master craftsman and home builder during his early years, and then truly enjoyed working for the U.S. Forest Service as a camp host at Ledgefork Campground during his retirement years. He was fondly know as Ranger Joe and is remembered by many campers whom he served there. In the recent past he has very much enjoyed the good times and people at the Bountiful Senior Center and those who lived near him in the condos.
