Joy Hogan

CENTERVILLE- Our loving mother and grandmother left this earth
peacefully Sunday evening, December 23, 2012. She was 93 years old.
Joy was born November 29, 1919, in Kaysville, Utah. She received her name because her mother said she brought so much joy to their home.
Joy married Eric Duncan Hogan on May 3, 1941 and was later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple while he was on leave from the Air Force during World War II. During the war, she worked as a switchboard operator and moved from base to base with Eric.
They have 2 children, 9 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Joy loved her family and loved having them all in her home for Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas, and just to play. Her grandson, Brad, had a special place in her heart and he spent many happy hours at their home playing their favorite game, “Hand and Foot.” Joy doted on Brad, making him sandwiches and bringing him and Eric drinks as they watched Jazz and BYU games on T.V. and played pool. Brad has special needs and spending time with his grandparents brought so much joy to his life.
Joy and Eric loved to travel and brought many souvenirs to their anxiously awaiting grandchildren. They always looked forward to a postcard signed by “G & G.” Joy also loved spending time at their home in St. George with family and friends.
Joy and Eric were loyal BYU fans and enjoyed going to football games and traveling with the Cougar Club. Joy was never without her stadium chair and big fur coat at the games. She also loved going to the Rose Parade every year.
Grandchildren and great-grandchildren came first to Joy and they will always remember how much they were loved. Favorite memories include ice cream cones at her house, animal crackers, the toy room, ping pong, lunches made, hair and fingernails done, and trying on her high heels.
Joy filled her life with service and kindness. She made thousands of hats for the humanitarian center, and volunteered at the South Davis Community Hospital as a “Pink Lady” for many years. Many people have mentioned anonymous acts of service rendered by Joy and Eric throughout their lives. She served with the youth and Relief Society organizations and had a great testimony and love of the gospel. Eric was the Patriarch of the Centerville Stake for many years and countless lives were touched as they would come into their home to receive their patriarchal blessings. Joy would transcribe the blessings and considered it a great honor to be a part of those special events. Joy spent the last 5 years at the Welcome Home Assisted Living Facility where she was greatly loved and cared for. Joy loved to cook for her family so she especially enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and watching the wonderful Chef prepare their meals. The staff and those who visited often spoke about how she always had a smile. They loved her sweet spirit and nicknamed her “Joy – Joy.” She enjoyed going on rides with her daughter and loved getting Cutler’s cookies and a Diet Coke. Joy’s family is very grateful for the great care she received at Welcome Home and all of the staff members who loved her so much.
As a family we are so happy to know Joy and Eric are together again at this Christmas season.
Joy is survived by her siblings, Orrin, Deon, Grant (Donelda), Edith Randall Garrett (Darryl), her children Michael (Jane) and Pamela Hogan Carr (Alex), her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 29 at 11:00 AM at the Roland Way Chapel. 610 N. Roland Way, Centerville, UT. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. prior to the funeral service.
