Heaven gained an angel when our mother Joyce Benard passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2022. She was a kind and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Joyce was born on December 27, 1928, to Juel Elias Trowbridge (Doc) and Dora Trowbridge (Nanny). As the oldest of five children, she developed a unique ability to care for others. A trait that would define her life of service to her family and friends.
She graduated from Davis High School in the distinguished class of 1947, where she met many of her lifelong friends. She later attended the University of Utah, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree. Joyce married her high school sweetheart, Lee Benard. They were married on June 19, 1950, in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. Together they cherished their time raising children and traveling the world. Lee and Joyce were truly sweethearts in every sense of the word, and inseparable as companions.
Joyce worked at Bountiful Medical Center supporting her father before later joining Bountiful Junior High School as a secretary. She was a talented musician and taught piano to students in the Bountiful and Salt Lake City communities for many years. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her entire life, serving in various capacities that she dearly loved. She was always looking for ways to give back to the communities she loved and took an interest in volunteering with many different organizations. She particularly loved Mu Phi Epsilon (music teachers association), Bountiful History Museum, and was a charter member of Jessamine Junior Literary Book Club.
She cherished the time spent with loved ones at the family cabin in Island Park, Idaho. Her calendar always seemed to be full of fun activities. As she grew older, she spent her time reading, sewing, volunteering, enjoying music, picking up sticks in the yard, and playing bridge. Throughout her life, she carried on the traditions of her Mother (Nanny) by hosting dinner for family and friends and making sure everyone always had a place to gather together.
Joyce is survived by her three children: Anne Benard Christensen, Steven Lee Benard, Jay T. (Virginia) Benard; seven grandchildren: Jennifer (Aaron) Lee, Kimberly Brimhall, Michael Christensen, Staci Christensen, Matthew Christensen, Jase Benard, and Tj Benard; and six great-grandchildren: Kapri Brimhall, Libby Brimhall, Alice Christensen, Emerson Brimhall, Enzo Brimhall, and Jeron Lee. She is also survived by her brother, Bill Trowbridge, and sister, Lucile (Jerry) VanderMeyden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Benard; parents, Juel and Dora Trowbridge; and sisters Lois Pickett, and Janet Schoenhals.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the doctors and staff of Legacy House of Bountiful and Utah Hospice. In lieu of flowers, Joyce requested contributions be made to the Bountiful History Museum.
