Joyce Geary Shaum passed away peacefully of a stroke at the age of 82 in her home in Bountiful, Utah on March 31, 2014
Born on March 14, 1932 in Morgan, Utah to Calvin and Elizabeth Geary, Joyce lived a wonderful life full of art, music, and travel. She loved growing up in rural Morgan, with open space and animals. She attended Ogden High School and later attended Weber State College, where she played flute in the band and met her future husband, Milt Shaum. Joyce lived in Los Angeles for a time where she worked for the FBI. Joyce married Milt Shaum in the Logan Temple on July 21, 1954. Once married, she traveled with her husband, who was in the military, to Japan where she had her first child, Megan. They moved to Davis County and had five more children. Her caring nature took her to a very nurturing position at Monte Vista, a school for special needs children. She held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including Relief Society President, Stake Primary Presidency Counselor, and worked with Milt in the LDS Museum of Church History and Art during and after the 2002 Olympics. In 1995, she and Milt served a couples mission back in Japan. Joyce loved music, arts, and crafts. Many of us cherish the afghans, quilts, button wreaths, and Chigiri-e (a Japanese torn-paper art), that she made with care and gave with her typical generosity. She played the piano beautifully and taught many others how to play. Joyce loved decorating her home and had beautiful décor for every holiday. She especially loved owls and her home is full of owl art. Joyce was beautiful, caring, generous, without guile, and was a friend to everyone. She emphasized the Savior in everything she did.
Joyce is predeceased by her parents and siblings Arlene Patterson, Wayne Geary, Marybeth Millett, and Don Geary. She is survived by her husband, Milt Shaum, her six children; Megan Crowley, Brent Shaum, Sally Shaum, Ryan Shaum, Jayne Shaum, Stacy Traeden; her sister, Rosanne Albright; and her beloved Shitsu, Boomer. Joyce had eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank our hospice angels and our community for helping us through this difficult time.
Her funeral will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, April 4th at the LDS Stake Center at 1250 South Main Street in Bountiful, Utah.
A viewing will take place from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, April 3rd at the Russon Brothers Mortuary at 295 North Main Street in Bountiful, Utah and at 12:00pm to 12:45pm on April 4th at the LDS Stake Center.
Her final resting place will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery at 2224 South 200 West in Bountiful, Utah.
