Joye Webster Petersen passed away on Monday, January 18, 2016 at home in Bountiful, Utah, at the age of 86. She was born on March 22, 1929 in Cedar City, Utah, the third of three children born to Wilford Urie Webster and Arabelle Jones Webster.
Joye grew up in Cedar City, attending Cedar City High School and the Branch Agricultural College (now Southern Utah University). There she met Robert Duane Petersen who was there on a basketball and track scholarship. They served together in student body leadership during their freshman year with Robert serving as President and Joye as Secretary. Their courtship extended through two additional years at Utah State University, from which they both graduated. Joye and Robert married on December 26, 1951 while he was home on Christmas leave from the United States Air Force. They were sealed in the St. George Temple on June 9, 1953.
Joye was a dedicated elementary and secondary school teacher in many of the places where she lived as the wife of an Air Force officer. She also supported the Church Education System as an executive assistant for Viewmont Seminary in Bountiful. Together with Robert, her husband of 64 years, she lived in Japan, Taiwan, and Norway, and domestically in Ohio, Texas, California, Maryland, Alabama, Colorado, Louisiana, and Utah.
Joye was an excellent cook and avid seamstress. She enjoyed putting on dinner parties during her husband's career and was always complimented on her ingenuity.
Joye was a faithful active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life. She followed the great example of her parents in service, and built on the legacy of her pioneer ancestors. Joye's great grandparents were Francis Webster and Ann Elizabeth Parsons Webster, members of the Martin Handcart Company. Joye served as a teacher and a leader in the Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society organizations. She and her husband also served as ordinance workers in both the Salt Lake and Bountiful temples, and as Church Service Missionaries for 23 years- six years in the Member Locator Center of the Church Membership Department and 17 years as hosts in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
Joye reared her two children, Robert D. Petersen Jr. and Lauri Petersen, in a faithful home, instilling in them the virtues of hard work, dedication, faith, and service. She is survived by her husband, children, sister LuJean Ennes, and four grandchildren, and was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Antone Jones Webster.
