Juan Joseph Allred

November 3, 1929 — April 29, 2023

St. George

Juan Joseph Allred passed away peacefully Saturday, April 29, 2023, at his home in St. George, Utah at the age of 93.  Juan was born in Smithfield, Utah on November 3, 1929, the seventh and youngest child of Arlin Richard and Irene Call Allred.

Juan graduated from North Cache High School in Richmond, Utah.  He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North Central States Mission (1949 — 1951).  After his mission, he attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan Utah, where he met Gladys Bingham. They were married on June 12, 1952, and have eight children.

Juan first worked as an auto mechanic in his father's garage in Smithfield, Utah, but then he worked for Weber Central Dairy in Ogden, Utah. Subsequently, he transferred to Weber Central Dairy in Rock Springs, Wyoming, where he served as bookkeeper, route supervisor and assistant manager.

Juan eventually returned to Smithfield, Utah and took over the Allred's Garage. In Smithfield Juan broke his back while he was repairing a large truck and was forced to change occupations. He returned to school at Utah State University (USU) and graduated in 1969 with a bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate in Industrial Education. In 1977, he completed a master's degree at USU.

Juan taught auto mechanic courses for 9 years at Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah. In 1978, Juan started the Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanics program for the DATC in Kaysville, Utah, and he taught there for 16 years. In 1993, he taught full-time for Volvo Heavy Truck Company. He retired from teaching in December of 1994.

Beginning in January of 1995, Juan and Gladys served as missionaries in the Fresno California Mission. Subsequently they served a second mission in the Salt Lake City Utah Mission, Fleet Division at the Church Office Building.

Juan had a firm and abiding testimony of Jesus Christ and often bore his witness to his family.  He was a great Patriarch of the Allred Family where he led by word and deed.  He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served willingly in many callings: bishopric member, temple worker, stake high councilor, stake Sunday School president, high priest group leader and secretary, and Gospel Doctrine instructor.

His hobbies included camping, traveling in his fifth wheel, making stain glass, wood working, and being with his children and grandchildren.  He was a kind and gentle man, loved by all, and he will be greatly missed.  It’s not good-bye but see you later!

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gladys Bingham Allred, and all eight of their children and spouses: Joseph (Ann) Allred, Irene (Jerry) Thomas, Sharene (Gary) Lloyd, Annette (Marvin) Jones, Renae (Alan) Ruppe, Keith (Sherry) Allred, Gaylene (Kent) Burbidge, Paul (Krista) Allred; 43 grandchildren and 84 great-grandchildren.

Juan was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
