Julia Anne Hawkins

Julia Anne Cushing Hawkins 1936-2019 Layton, UT – Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister passed away on May 14, 2019 from Alzheimer’s.  She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 7, 1936 to Rodney Wayne Cushing and Veda Julianne (Jeri) Jensen Cushing. 

Julia attended East High School and graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Elementary Education.  She loved to travel and had many adventures in Europe and Hawaii.  She loved the ocean.  She met Joseph Ralph Hawkins at the University of Utah and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on December 19, 1960. 

Julia had a love for music and became an accomplished pianist and had a beautiful singing voice.  She was a member of the Utah Oratorio Society and the University of Utah Chorale.  She was a talented seamstress and spent many hours creating beautiful quilts, clothing for her children, and even made her own wedding dress.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Julia and Ralph raised their 4 children in Holladay.  Several moves later, they settled in Kaysville.      

Julia was active in the community.  She served in many church callings, including Relief Society and Primary.  She gracefully supported her husband as he served as Bishop for 5 years.  She was a faithful daughter of God with a strong testimony of the Gospel.  Julia loved family history and re-telling pioneer stories.  She was a volunteer at Red Butte Garden and the Museum of Natural History.  She and Ralph volunteered together at Wheeler Farm and This is the Place State Park, and were so proud of their pioneer heritage.  They also served together at the Jordan River Temple and at The Joseph Smith Memorial Building. 

Julia is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ralph, children Christopher (Debra), Kathleen (Gerald), Karen (Mike) and Curtis (Melanie), her brother Rodney W. Cushing, 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandsons. 

We would like to give special thanks to all of the nurses, aids and other staff at Apple Village Assisted Living for the care given to Julia during her illness.  Also, we express a heartfelt thanks to Inspiration Home Health and Hospice, especially Donette and her staff, for the loving care of Julia in her last few days before returning home to her Heavenly Father.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 20, 2019 11:00 am at Russon Brothers Mortuary 1941 N Main Farmington, UT 84025.  Friends and family are invited to visit Sunday evening, May 19, 2019 from 6 to 8 pm and Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 am.  Interment will follow at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
