Junior David Call passed away on December 26, 2021. He was born October 10, 1929 to David Call, Jr. and Olive Bertha Clark Call. Early in life, J. David (JD or Dave) learned to love hard work on the farm with his industrious family. After serving a mission to Eastern Canada, J. David married his high school sweetheart, Dawn Davis, on July 17, 1951 in the Logan, Utah Temple. Together they nurtured 6 grateful children, 34 grandchildren and 71 great grandchildren.
J. David had a firm testimony of Jesus Christ. His discipleship was reflected through whole-hearted service in many church callings and assignments. J. David served as stake patriarch, temple ordinance worker, bishop, high councilor and in the stake young men’s presidency. J. David and Dawn served a full-time mission to Atlanta Georgia 1995 to 1996 where they made many lifelong friends. They served alongside a Canadian couple who were taught the gospel by J. David when he was a young missionary in Canada.
J. D. loved creating a beautiful yard filled with his favorite flowers, tomatoes and peach trees. His flower beds were famous. Neighbors would change the way they walked just to go by and drink in the beauty of his begonias, germaniums, dahlias, canna lilies, petunias, and zinnias. He loved the look on people’s faces when he gave them a special basket full of tomatoes or peaches that he had picked.
His love of flowers began early in life. As a high school student, classmates recall J. David riding the bus to Davis High with his arms full of flowers for the ornamental horticulture class while sitting next to his sweetheart, Dawn Davis. In his young adult years, he earned a wall full of ribbons from county and state fairs for his beautiful chrysanthemums.
Many family and ward parties were enlivened by the sound of his real sleighbells. When Dad rang the sleighbells, their bright and thrilling sound brought children to their feet instantly. His red suit work filled his heart with great joy, especially when he could make a Christmas eve delivery to children who had no hope of receiving a gift on Christmas morning.
Dad cherished visits from family and friends. And everyone enjoyed his stories, generosity, homemade ice-cream and treats.
J. David was unique in his parenting skills because he found a way to involve his children in almost everything he did. He took sons to job sites where they carried tools, learned to cut and thread steel pipe and how to weld. Everyone in the family, including married children, helped work a large tomato patch with more than 2000 tomato plants. Dad used the annual tomato crop to fund the missionary service of his sons.
Dad loved BYU sports. He especially loved to watch or listen to BYU basketball and baseball games when his cousin and nephews were playing. He loved attending games in LaVell Edwards Stadium and watching the historic string of Quarterbacks rack up hundreds of yards in passing offence.
Dad, there is no way to fully express our gratitude and appreciation for the way you loved and cared for mom and loved each of us, for your Christ-centered life, kindness, priesthood blessings and endless acts of service to family and friends. We pray that we can live up to your example.
Loved by all who knew him, J. David is celebrated in life and in death by his 6 children David D. Call (Teri), Glen S. Call (ReNae), Nadine Craig (Paul), Evan W. Call (Teresa), Scott C. Call (Vicky), Kent L. Call (Jennifer). He was preceded in death by his sweetheart Dawn Davis Call, his older brothers, Lewis Call and Orland Call, and two sisters, Lucille Call Stringham and Phyllis Call Ball. Survived by his brother Henry Michael Call (JeNeal Schow Call), and sister Ann Marie Call Kammerman (Gerald C. Kammerman)
