Justin Fred Hurst

September 17, 1924 — March 16, 2016

Justin Fred Hurst was born in Payson, Utah September 17, 1924 to Justin Earl and Lucinda Inez Tanner Hurst.  He grew up in Salt Lake City and spent numerous summers on his grandfather Tanner’s farm in Payson.  Fred graduated from Salt Lake City East High School.  He served our country honorably in the United States Army during World War Two and also served a 3 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Uruguay, South America Mission.
In September of 1950 Fred married Beverly Willmore in the Salt Lake City Temple.  He subsequently graduated with Bachelor and Masters degrees from the University of Utah.  He worked in various capacities as a counselor and social worker in Ogden and Bountiful, Utah.  In 1968 he completed and was conferred a Doctorate of Educational Psychology degree from Utah State University.  Upon moving to Boise, Idaho in 1968 Fred continued his career as private practice counseling psychologist until his retirement in 1996.  Soon after retirement he and Beverly moved back to Bountiful where they enjoyed the company of their grandchildren and other family members.
After Beverly’s death in 2004, he married the former Heike McGinnis in 2007 .  Heike was a loving and supportive companion to Fred during these past nine years. Hazel, Heike’s and Fred’s dog, was a special companion who always found her place on Fred’s lap. During the last two days of Fred’s life, Hazel cuddled up with Fred and never left his side.
Fred was an avid reader and his love of learning and books was evident by his personal library that seemed to occupy numerous places in his home. He also enjoyed gardening and attending the Sun Valley Jazz Festival each year. He served as an ordinance worker in the Bountiful Temple in his later years.  He had an active interest in his two sons- serving as a scout leader and baseball coach when they were young, and as they grew older supported Craig’s musical and Earl’s athletic endeavors- attending numerous concerts, baseball and basketball games. He was a loving grandfather and great grandfather and loved being with his family.
