Karla Mae Moon Smith peacefully passed away on November 5, 2024. She was born in Farmington, Utah to Evan Westwood “Ted” Moon and Sarah Ann Hess Moon. She was the second child and the only girl, having an older brother Bruce and two younger brothers Richard and Verl. Karla was often described by her brothers as “the one who never got in trouble”. She loves each of her brothers and their families very much.
Karla grew up in Farmington, a close-knit rural farming community. Her father worked with the livestock at The Herford Potter Brothers Farm in Farmington. Her mother worked as a cook at the Heidelberg Restaurant in Farmington and Lee's Cafe in Bountiful. Karla was taught well by her parents the importance of a clean house and plenty of food on the table. She had a passion for cooking, cleaning and even ironing. She was always putting others' needs before her own and had a strong love for anyone that came into her home. She always stood in the entryway as they left and would not shut the door until they were on the road.
Karla has lived in Farmington her whole life and has witnessed its remarkable transformation firsthand. She’s seen Shepard Lane change from a dirt road to the busy road it is today. She has also been blessed to live on Main Street in Farmington all her life. The house that Karla grew up in still stands on Main Street today. Next to that house is the one that her and Chad built 50 years ago. Next to that house is the one they built about 25 years ago and lived in ever since.
Karla attended Davis High School, graduating in 1963. She then went on to attend college at Stevens-Henager Business School in Ogden.
One of Karla’s first jobs was working at the Davis County Processing Library in Farmington where she met her husband Chad. Chad was a young kid and asked her to set him up with one of her friends, if not she would have to go herself. As it turned out Karla was having some car troubles and Chad offered to look at it. Chad noticed her fan belt was loose, fixed it and filled up her tank with gas. When Karla asked her mother what she thought of Chad, she said, “ anyone who keeps your gas tank full might be the right person”. With that assurance they continued their courtship for a few months until Chad left for a mission to the West Central States Mission.
After his mission, Chad and Karla were able to pick things up right where they left off and were married three months later. Karla and Chad would own over 30 automobiles during their time together. It was a 2004 Lexus that had a fast warming heated seat that she loved the most. Karla and Chad put many miles on that car.
Karla had a great work ethic. After working at the Davis County Library, she took a job working for the Davis School District Headquarters. She then moved on to work at Interstate Battery for a time before going to work for Davis County. Karla enjoyed over 35 years working for Davis County in several different positions. When Karla retired she was working in the Vital Statistics Department, which keeps track of all birth and death certificates in the county. Each of the grandchildren have Karla’s signature on their birth certificates. Karla became good friends with the morticians in the area, and loved to hear their stories.
Karla had the opportunity to serve in many church callings, including several presidencies with the Relief Society, Young Women and Primary. Her favorite calling was being a primary teacher. She had a strong testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ and of the truthfulness of his restored gospel. She always wanted her family to know the importance of these things in each of their lives.
Some of Karla’s achievements were: Sixth grade “Jacks” champion, Crowned Miss Farmington 1963, Davis County Employee of the year 2004, Best wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother all throughout her life.
She deeply loved each of her girls, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always told her family “ stay close to home” and “don’t go up Farmington Canyon”!
Karla was preceded in death by; her parents Ted and Sarah, her brother Bruce and niece Alicia Moon Patrick, also her two wonderful friends from her youth, Linda Moon Hill and Joy Rigby Brown.
Karla will be dearly missed by her loving husband Chad, daughters Angelia (Mike) Polson, Kristie (Clint) Hutchings, Stacie (Mark) London, grandchildren Dallin (Mariah), Kyle (Karlie), Blake, Callie (Ethan), Holland, Brody (Sommer), KaeDee, Cambria, Jordan, Gracie, Zoe, Ty, great grandchildren Carter and Covey, as well as her two brothers Richard (Terry) Moon and Verl (Laura) Moon and their families.
