Kathleen Horsley Redd

November 2, 1923 — December 17, 2016

Kathleen Horsley Redd, 93, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully at her home on December 17, 2016.  She was born on November 2, 1923, in Salt Lake City, UT to Joseph LeRoy and Flora Kohler Horsley.  She was the "favorite" and only daughter.  She had a younger brother, Grant, and they had a life-long friendship and loyal relationship.  Her childhood was spent in Malad, ID.  When she was in High School, her family moved to Salt Lake City, UT.  She graduated from East High School and received a B.S. degree in Home Economics from the University of Utah.  She served an LDS Mission in the East Central States Mission/Central Atlantic States Mission from 1945 to 1947.

She met her future husband, Leland Wayne Redd, Jr., when he was assigned to be her Sunday School teacher.  She was still in high school – and he was already a returned missionary, so she thought he was an "old man".  When she returned from her LDS Mission, Wayne was just returning from serving as a Naval Officer during World War II.  They got reacquainted, fell in love and – the rest is history!  They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on February 3, 1949.  They were married for 60 years, until Wayne passed away on September 18, 2009.  Theirs was a marriage of true equals.  Wayne was the engine that made the family run – Kathleen was the heart and soul of the family.  She was a loving, kind, creative mother.  She loved holidays, especially Christmas.  It is very fitting that she is spending this Christmas with her beloved husband, parents and two daughters that proceeded her in death.

She and Wayne loved to travel.  They were privileged to travel with friends, children and grandchildren to many parts of the United States and the World.  She was an artist.  She painted beautiful oil paintings and decorated her home in a stylish manner.  She was an excellent cook and excelled in her chocolate candy making skills.  She served her family with great love and was unselfish in every way.  She was a woman of great intellect.  She belonged to "The Malad Club" – a group of childhood friends that met together until they were all too old to drive.  She also belonged to "Book Club" where she discussed current events and literary interests.  She was a scholar of the Gospel.  She loved to read – and she was learning and discovering right up until the end of her life.  It was a sad day when she had to give up her driving privileges; there was still so much of the world she wanted to explore.

She was a woman of tremendous faith, courage, commitment and compassion.  She has served faithfully as Relief Society President, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, Visiting Teacher, Cub Scout Leader and many other responsibilities in the LDS Church.  Just prior to her passing, she had the responsibility of calling all the members in her ward on their birthday.  Whatever she did – she did it wholeheartedly.

She and Wayne were blessed to be the parents of seven children:  Suzanne (Lee) Fry – both deceased; Jayne (Marty) Kearl, Bountiful; Claudia (Mark) Sandberg, Henderson, NV; Lee (Kathy) Redd, Bountiful; Patrice Redd (deceased); Steven Redd, Bountiful; and Thomas Redd, Farmington.  She is also survived by her only brother, Grant (Cherie) Horsley, Bountiful.  She has 15 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held Friday, December 23, 2016 at the Val Verda 9th Ward, 3317 South 800 West, Bountiful, UT at 11:00 a.m.  Viewings will be held at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, UT on Thursday, December 22, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and on Friday morning at the Val Verda 9th Ward from 9:30-10:30 a.m.  Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
