Centerville – Kathleen Jackman Hummel danced through the veil on September 14, 2019, finally free of Alzheimer’s Disease. Born to Francis Burt and Alta Anderson Jackman on June 24, 1928, in Joseph, Utah. Her childhood years were spent in the Western United States wherever her father could find work during the depression. Her family settled in Salt Lake City where she graduated from South High School. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with an unshakeable testimony. She used to say she was born with “believing blood” and never doubted. She served faithfully in many church auxiliary callings, her favorite being primary, where she loved and was loved by the children. She was a docent at the Church History Museum for many years, and she and her husband, John, served a mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. They later served as ordinance workers in the Bountiful Temple.
After high school Kathleen worked as a secretary to Church General Authorities. She later worked in the office at Hoffman’s Hardware where she met Ruth Hummel who hand-picked her to marry her son, John. Kathleen and John were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on September 27,1946, and would have celebrated their 73rd anniversary this month.
Kathleen was a licensed cosmetologist who owned and operated Kathleen’s Beauty Boutique for over 20 years. She found joy in “making ladies lovely”. A proud member of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), Kathleen was a strong role model, paving the way for generations of women to follow.
Kathleen loved being a wife and mother and helped raise many children besides her own six. She and John loved to dance, and in addition to frequenting various ballrooms in the Salt Lake City area, they taught young adults the art of dancing. Kathleen willingly served wherever she was needed, day or night. Her home was a gathering place where you could always find books, movies, popcorn, fun, and unconditional love.
Kathleen is survived by her husband, John Snarr Hummel and their children and spouses: Kathy and Paul Wendel, Wendy and Steven Nagao, John and Janice Hummel, Tamara and Richard Thomas, Heidi Hummel-Grant and Larry Grant, Shannon and Spence Hebdon along with 23 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Frances Jackman Newbold and their brother Stanley Jackman.
The family is grateful to Encompass Hospice for their compassionate service.
