Katie Elizabeth Simpson Cunningham, 91, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013 from Multiple Myoloma.

She was born June 7, 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland. She met a handsome Navy man, Carlos Cunningham, at church on Sunday in Virginia and they fell in love and married. They had 48 wonderful years together. He died April 5, 1985, on their 48th wedding anniversary.

Katie was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a kind, thoughtful, generous person who loved to help. She worked in the Primary for 25 years and taught in the scouting program for 17 of those years. She went on many 5-mile hikes with her Guide Patrol boys. She and Carlos loved to Square Dance and danced for several years. She and Carlos also served in the Ogden temple for 9 years and after he died she worked for 10 more years and then worked in the Bountiful Temple for 6 months. She had 19 ½ years of temple service. She and Carlos were also missionaries at Cherry Hill for two years.

She loved to travel especially with her son, Don, who has taken her to Hawaii several times. She loved Hawaii and lived there twice when Carlos was in the Navy. That is where her twins Reuben and Ruth were born. She was there with Carlos, Delores and Don when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

She is survived by six of her seven children: Delores (Leonard) Moon of Lehi, Don Cunningham of Fruit Heights, David (Sheryl) Cunningham of Layton, Reuben (Julie) Cunningham of East Layton, Ruth Cunningham Sweat and Chris Cunningham of Farmington and 19 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren and 11 great, great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by the love of her life, Carlos Cunningham, a son Robert Bruce, a grandson Michael Don Cunningham and a daughter-in-law Erna Payne Cunningham.

Katie’s family would like to thank Dr. Jason Stinnett and her nurse Queenie Aydelott and Hospice for their loving and wonderful care of their mother.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday May 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Steed Creek Chapel located at 347 S. 200 W. in Farmington, UT. A viewing will be held at Russon Brothers Mortuary at 1941 N. Main St., Farmington, Utah on Monday, May 20, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. and also from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will be at the Farmington City Cemetery.
