Kay Bastian Cummings

February 14, 1956 — June 20, 2018

Kay Bastian Cummings passed away peacefully June 20, 2018 surrounded by family. She joins her beloved parents, Merlin Surn and Christie Corbridge Bastian, in what is surely a joyous reunion.

Kay was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1956 in Malad, Idaho. She spent her childhood riding horses, learning the value of hard work and serving others. As the youngest of five children, Kay’s four older brothers sometimes teased, but always loved and looked after her.

Kay was an accomplished dancer and rodeo athlete. She won many awards for both, including the Idaho State “All-Around Cowgirl” title and saddle.

She received a nursing degree at Utah State University, where she met her husband, Craig Cummings. The two were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, June 9, 1978 in a ceremony performed by Elder Thomas S. Monson.

Nursing was a perfect fit for Kay, as caring for those around her came naturally and brought her great fulfillment. Kay’s hard work was recognized in a number of prestigious positions, including Head of the Pediatrics Department at Lakeview Hospital, before she retired to be a full-time mother to her children and friend to all.

Kay enjoyed many hobbies, including travel and SCUBA diving. She saw much of the world and loved everyone she ever met. She never let a difference in language or culture be a barrier to her expression of Christ-like love.

Kay was an amazing example of unconditional love and enduring to the end. She found gratitude in all things, even in adversity. Those who know Kay admire her Christ-like ability to not only see, but highlight the best in others. Above all, Kay was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose greatest joy came from her family, her faith and her powerful testimony of the Savior.

Kay is survived by her husband Craig, her son Judd Cummings (Jennifer), her daughters Cambria Sawatzki (Kirk), Caroline Watterson (Eric) and Christina Walker (Shawn) and 12 (soon to be 13) grandchildren. A viewing will be held Thursday, June 28th at Russon Brothers Mortuary at 1941 North Main Street in Farmington from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Services will be held Friday, June 30th at 11:00 am at the LDS Compton Bench Chapel at 850 North Compton Road in Farmington, with a viewing prior to the service from 9:45 to 10:45 am at the chapel.
