Kay Mercer

Biography

Kay Lloyd Mercer passed away July 18, 2012 at the age of 96 in Centerville, Utah. He was born February 4, 1916 in Magrath, Alberta, Canada to Ammon Julian Mercer and Florence Forsyth Mercer. The family moved to Bountiful in 1922. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII where he flew as a navigator on B24’s in Italy.
He graduated Davis High School and the University of Utah. As a Chemical Engineer, Kay worked at Mountain Fuel Supply Company (Questar) and later managed the Bountiful Office.
Kay actively participated in Rotary and the Bountiful Chamber of Commerce. He gave recommendations to the youth of the area: “Find what you are most interested in and where you can be of greatest service to your fellowman.” He encouraged the youth to get a good education.
He married Elva Vivian Schulthies May 16, 1941 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had seven children. Elva passed away in 1973. Kay married Fern Jeppsen McAfee June 29, 1974. She had three children: Vicky, Steve and Brenda. Kay and Fern resided in Provo.
Kay enjoyed hiking, camping, traveling, photography, gardening, water and snow sports. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them.
He served as a teacher, missionary, and temple worker in the Provo Temple in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The family thanks the staff of Beehive House for their service, care and concern.
He is survived by wife, Fern; children, Ann (Roger) Bennett, Lynne (Patsy), Paula (Barry) Godwin, Terry (Brook), Vicki (Jerry) Shupe, Rae Dean, and Brian (Sao); as well as Fern’s children, Vicky (Mike) Clay and Brenda; 35 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 23, 2012 at the Edgemont 2nd Ward, 720 East 3230 North, Provo, Utah. A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, and Monday morning 9:45 – 10:45 am at the church prior to services. Interment will be at Bountiful City Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.

A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, and Monday morning 9:45 – 10:45 am at the church prior to services. Interment will be at Bountiful City Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.
