Keith Chad Nelson

June 26, 1934 — January 25, 2022

Keith Chad Nelson was born in Salt Lake City on June 26, 1934 to Casper Nelson and Grace Malstrom Nelson. He was the only son and had one sister Carol Nelson Tyler (Dean).

Keith grew up in Midvale Utah where he graduated from Jordan High in 1952. He graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelors in Geography. While attending the University he met Lila Coleman. They were married in the Salt Temple on February 19, 1960.

In his early years Keith enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, camping and hunting with his father and friends. He introduced the outdoors to his beloved wife and children, spending summers in the Northern Utah Mountains and the Southern Utah landscape. He enjoyed history, reading and keeping his yard and garden productive and beautiful.

In 1961 Keith was employed by the United States Government, as a cartographer for the Federal Aviation Agency (later renamed the Federal Aviation Administration). In the analog days of the FAA he used a slide ruler to calculate flight paths and used hand drafting techniques to draw flight maps for the air traffic controllers in the Salt Lake City Air Traffic Control Center. He received commendation for his work in incorporating cartography into newly acquired army surplus RADAR equipment. He spent his entire career with the FAA.

Keith was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where his service included Webelo’s leader, a counselor in the Bishopric, High Priest Group Leader, and an ordinance worker at the Bountiful Temple. His main interest was his wife, children, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Children include Kent (Barbara), Norman, Christine Beeton (Dan), and Glen (Carla). Keith regularly wrote letters to his children and grandchildren, all of whom respect him highly and love his firm but peaceful, loving demeanor. He was a kind, thoughtful, patient, and respected man who was interested in the physical world around him and who also spent time serving neighbors and writing letters to housebound friends.
