Kenneth Eugene Hughes, 57, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 in the home of his best friend and life partner, Bonnie Vaccaro, after a battle with cancer which began earlier this year.
Ken was born on December 10, 1955 at St. Mark’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, to Charles Herman Hughes and Velma Jeppson Hughes. He was raised in Bountiful and was the youngest of six children.
At the young age of 10 he began working part time for Herm Hughes and Sons General Contractors. He continued working for the company for his remaining 47 years. For the majority of his career he filled the role of superintendent, supervising many builds and working hard to ensure only the highest quality results. In later years, he took on the role of purchasing manager. He always had great pride to be working for the company his father founded.
Ken attended high school at Bountiful High. During his senior year, he played football for the school’s team. While in high school, he picked up the nickname “Herm,” after his father, which he was proud to be called by many of his friends throughout his life.
After high school, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Auckland, New Zealand 1976 – 1978. He always spoke fondly of his time in New Zealand.
Ken married Marsha Marie Beeman on January 29, 1980. They had two children, Kenneth Herm Hughes (1981) and Brandon Thomas Hughes (1985). He was a wonderful father that offered unconditional love and taught his children the value of hard work and honesty. Ken and Marsha later divorced in the year 2000.
In 2001, he met Bonnie, with whom he shared the remainder of his life. Together, they enjoyed attending concerts, motorcycling and traveling. He talked frequently about the time he spent with her, and it was obvious that he loved her with all of his heart.
Ken’s interests included a great love for music, with specific emphasis on songs that had a positive, relatable meaning that he could apply to his life. He loved playing his harmonica. He also loved his Big Dog Chopper and taking rides with his partner Bonnie and son Brandon, and cooking for others (especially Dutch oven cooking).
Ken took great pride in everything that he did, and would never settle for anything short of the best. No matter what the situation, he could always find something to joke about. He always put other’s needs above his own. Family was always very important to him, and he was proud of his family’s legacy. He was a terrific, loving man, and he will be greatly missed by many. We are all very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to know him, love him, and be loved by him.
Ken’s family would like to thank hospice for the short time they were caring for him and for allowing him to pass comfortably in a place he considered home, surrounded by the people that were most important to him: his family.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Herman Hughes and Velma Hughes; and brothers, Charles La Mar Hughes and David Hughes.
He is survived by his life partner, Bonnie Vaccaro; sons, Kenneth Herm Hughes and Brandon Hughes; daughter-in-law, Nicole Hughes; sister, Carolynne Guiste (Stanley); brothers, Glenn Hughes and Dwayne Hughes (Colleen); countless nephews and nieces; and Bonnie’s family, Jerry Sr., Kaye, Jerry, Camille, and Crystal.
