Biography

Kenneth Dale Newman of Bountiful, 86, died Feb. 15 in Palm Springs, California, where he had made his winter home for the past many years.
Ken was born in Muncie, Indiana, on June 13, 1927 to Ruth M. Chambers and Harold S. Newman. His family was victim of the Great Depression, but he learned early the value of hard work, a characteristic he displayed throughout his life. Even as he reached his mid-80s, Ken enjoyed actively working.
After graduating from high school, Ken joined the United States Army, where he served as a battery clerk for his battalion. It was during this time that he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
While attending BYU, he met Jewel Stensland of Chicago, who had also recently joined the Church. The two planned to get married, but then Ken decided to serve a mission despite opposition from his family, so Jewel worked in Chicago while he served in the Eastern States Mission. She sent his wedding invitation to him in the mission field and they were married five days after his release.
Ken worked for 25 years in the finance industry. At the age of 50, he decided to leave that business and open Newman’s Art & Antiques. Combining his naturally keen eye for high-quality merchandise with his business smarts, Ken’s shop became a well-known establishment in Bountiful, and he built a strong base of customers and friends who enjoyed returning often. During the winters, he lived in Palm Springs, where he would purchase much of the inventory he sold at his shop throughout the rest of the year.
Ken possessed a strong, independent personality but had sincere, humble faith in God and Jesus Christ. Full of optimism even through hard times, he had a love for life that buoyed others up. He was a captivating storyteller who could keep an audience engaged for hours.
Ken and Jewel had six children: Julie McDonald (Scott), Kristine Day (David); Laura, Kenneth David, Amy, and George (Kristin) Newman; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Jewel preceded Ken in death in 2003, as did their son Kenneth David in 2007.
