“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21)
Kevin Carlson Duncan returned to his Heavenly Father on January 3, 2025, surrounded by his family after a 5-month battle with Esophageal Cancer. He never once complained, continually reassuring his loved ones to trust in Heavenly Father’s plan. His memory lives on with his cherished wife, three daughters, their spouses, and 12 grandchildren. He leaves a legacy of hard work, faith, determination, love, and humor that will forever bless the lives of those who knew him.
Born on July 25, 1957, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Elmer and Lucile Duncan, Kevin was the ninth of ten children in a large and happy family who taught him how to love.
Kevin attended Bountiful High School and later earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Utah. (Go Utes!) His chosen vocation was in project management, working with dedication for 38 years at American Express, earning numerous awards for his contributions and leadership. He truly cared for people within his stewardship, earning their love and respect. Some affectionately referred to him as their “Godfather.”
In 1979, Kevin met the love of his life, Susan Franklin Duncan, at a church dance at the University of Utah. He had just returned from serving a mission in London, England, and Sue had just received her mission call to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Kevin faithfully wrote to Sue on her mission and upon her return, they were married and sealed for time and all eternity on May 9, 1981, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They built a beautiful life together with their three daughters. They called many places home across Utah and Arizona, building memories and gaining lifelong friends everywhere they went.
Through 43 years of marriage Kevin always made Sue feel like a queen. Most mornings, she would wake up to a Diet Coke and a maple bar waiting for her on her nightstand. His family was his greatest pride and joy. Fishing, boating, watching football, family dinners, playing pool volleyball, “Bruce-ball”, rocking plaid pants, playing the guitar, and going on big family cruises were some of Kevin’s favorite things. Any time the family was together there was nothing but laughter and joy. A devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, Kevin was a dedicated teacher of the gospel. He served in many church callings but, his true passion was working with the youth and teaching missionary preparation classes.
After retiring, Kevin was so excited to work as a special needs school bus driver. “I’m a freakin bus driver” he said with pride and told stories of his darling passengers on a daily basis. His family will remember him as the smartest and funniest man in the world. He had a special love and relationship with each of his grandchildren and they will always remember their funny grandpa and their special grandpa handshake.
Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Bryant Duncan, his mother Lucile Carlson Duncan, his brothers Charles, Dick (Karen) and Don (Pam) Duncan, his sister Gail Olson (Ron) all who welcomed him with open arms on the other side. Kevin is survived by his beloved wife, Sue, and their daughters Lisa Stimpson (Kody), Janis Hardy (Kevin) and Dina Janke (Bradyn). He adored his 12 grandchildren: Riley, Jaydee, Trace, Brookie, Blake, Kendra, Jack, Jordyn, Tate, Jace, Noble and Faline. Surviving siblings, Joan Duncan, Ann (Rich) Bowen, Kris (Ron) Coleman, Debbie (Arnold) Eddings, and Scott (Jenny) Duncan.
As Kevin would say, “Do it once, do it right” and “Don’t forget to be groovy!” KI-YIIIIIII!!!
