Kristy Lynn (Wetzel Moring) Mitchell passed away in Farmington, UT on Friday, November 29 after a year long battle with lung cancer. She was surrounded by many family and friends.
Kristy was born August 30, 1971 in St. Ignatius, MT to Wayne and Marcia Wetzel. Anyone who knows Kristy knows that she deeply loved and felt very connected to Montana. She lived in various parts of Montana, Idaho, and British Columbia throughout her childhood, and graduated from Helena High School in 1989. From there, she went to Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR before transferring to Southern Utah University, where she earned her BA in Communication in 1993. She went on to earn her Masters in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin in 1997.
While working in Texas after graduation, Kristy met and married Greg Moring in 2001. They moved to Utah in 2003, and later divorced.
In Salt Lake City, Kristy worked at L3 Communications and later, Conexus. She was known as an extremely hard worker and wonderful team leader. This was evident in the strong friendships she enjoyed long after working together had ceased. At L3, she met Deborah Johnson, who became one of her very best friends. Deb even introduced Kristy to her nephew Roger in 2008, who became Kristy’s future husband.
Roger and Kristy enjoyed 16 years of love and adventure. Roger and Kristy made it official with a beautiful wedding ceremony on February 24, 2024 at the Tracy Aviary surrounded by one of Kristy’s favorite things… birds! Kristy was overjoyed when Rembrandt, a green-winged macaw, made an appearance just after the ceremony.
Kristy loved the outdoors, including hiking, biking, rowing, bird watching, fishing, and making her yard beautiful. Shortly before her diagnosis, she won a kayak race while on vacation in Ashley Lake, MT, beating the entire Mitchell family, including two former collegiate athletes. Kristy’s lung cancer diagnosis came as a shock to her and all that knew her as she was in incredible health and in amazing shape. Kristy fought through many ups and downs during her too-fast battle with cancer.
Kristy also loved art, reading, and board games (especially Rummikub), as well as traveling. Kristy and Roger enjoyed multiple trips to Europe and their annual fishing trip to Ketchikan, AK. They shared their love of the outdoors on many occasions whether it was hiking, camping, or simply a day picking huckleberries near Bear Lake. Kristy also loved coordinating and planning the biannual get together for the Mitchell family. The family has many fond memories of Coos Bay, OR, Black Hills, SD, and Ashley Lake, MT.
She was incredibly generous with her time and energy. She cherished all of her family and friends. She was especially close with her two younger sisters, Kazia and Kelsey. She was a beloved and attentive aunt to her many nieces and nephews. She was very independent and brave and lived every day with dignity and poise. Every person who knew her could feel her thoughtfulness and unique ability to help and support those around her. She is dearly missed.
Kristy is survived by her parents, Wayne and Marcia, and her seven siblings, Stephen, Kevyn (Susan), Gregory “Jonas” (Emi), Matthew (Lindsay), Bryan (Noa), Kelsey, and Kazia Wetzel. She is also survived by her husband, Roger Mitchell, three stepsons, Braden (Erin), Justin (Allison), and Cal (Cecilia) Mitchell, and two very beloved granddaughters, Hayes and Prescott.
In honor of Kristy’s final wishes, there will be no funeral services. The family and close friends will enjoy a graveside service in Spring 2025 at her birthplace in St. Ignatius, MT.
