Lance Gary Hammerland, 52, passed away July 14, 2014 in Bountiful, Utah. He was born Dec. 28, 1961, in Brigham City, Utah to Robert Gary and Diana Hammerland. He spent his early years in Utah and Idaho and graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1980. He served as a missionary for the LDS Church in the Portugal Lisbon mission from 1982-83.Lance had a lifelong love for the country and people of Portugal.
He married Sue Zan Anderson in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1984. They later divorced.
He graduated with a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Utah in 1993. He was a lifelong Utah Man. He worked in the field of drug discovery research and pharmaceuticals. Lance always connected very well with his colleagues and was always very well-liked and well-respected in the academic world in which he worked.
Throughout his life he served in many callings in the LDS Church, one of his
favorites being an early morning seminary teacher. He loved connecting with the youth,particularly young men preparing to serve missions. One of his greatest joys was seeing the young men he worked with serve faithful missions and return honorably from serving the Lord.
Lance was an avid fisherman. He loved spending time in the Tetons hiking and fly fishing. He also enjoyed ice fishing in the winter. Recently he gained a love for running and biking. Lance loved traveling around the world with his family. Tracing family roots in Sweden was one of his fondest memories. He also enjoyed taking road trips with his daughter to places like Southern Utah and the Grand Canyon. Lance will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his
compassion, his genuine love for people and his tender heart.
He is survived by his daughter Patricia (Jonathan) Leary of New York City; two granddaughters, Olivia and Sophia; sisters: Jan (Canyon) Anderson, Bountiful; Margaret (Derek) Evans, West Bountiful; Faith Hammerland, Idaho Falls; brothers: Cash (Nicole) Hammerland, Idaho Falls; Luke (Katie) Hammerland, Orem;
Carson Hammerland, Idaho Falls; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bountiful 27th Ward Chapel,
1145 N. 200 E. The viewings will be Friday 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful, and Saturday 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Corinne Cemetery.
