Larry Max Garlock

February 22, 1946 — September 7, 2024

Bountiful, UT

Our hearts are heavy as we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend Larry Max Garlock, who peacefully departed this world on September 7, 2024, with his cherished wife and lifelong love, Faye (Fayzie), by his side. Larry’s presence made the world a brighter, kinder place, and his love and generosity touched the lives of all who knew him. He has now returned to his Heavenly Father, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith and warmth that will forever be etched in our hearts.

Larry was born February 22, 1946, to Elwin and Letitia Garlock and was the youngest of 3 cherished children. Larry grew up in Sugarhouse and was a proud graduate of South High School. Larry went on to faithfully serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Western Canada, touching many lives with his love and unwavering faith. He went on to demonstrate his dedication to his country by serving in the Utah National Guard.

On November 20, 1969, Larry married the love of his life, Faye Deon Umphrey, in the Salt Lake City Temple, beginning their eternal love story. Together, they created a life full of laughter, adventure, and beautiful memories. Theirs is truly a love story that will forever inspire all who were blessed to witness it.

Family was at the very heart of Larry and Faye’s lives. They dedicated themselves to their children and grandchildren, doing their best to attend every game, race, wrestling meet, cheer competition, graduation, performance, or recital. No distance was too far for them to travel if it meant supporting those that they loved most. Larry was his children’s biggest cheerleader, always celebrating their achievements, not just in their youth, but throughout their entire lives. He had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel like they were his favorite. He filled every moment with encouragement and love that made each person feel special. His presence was a constant reminder of how much he cared.

Larry had a deep love of everything outdoors. When his children were young, family vacations were spent traveling and camping in Utah, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, California, Arizona and Baja Mexico. He was an avid hunter and instilled this love in his children, often having them join him at an early age in hunting adventures. He was an excellent fisherman and was happiest when he was on a river or lake with his children and grandchildren by his side. These special moments created memories that will last a lifetime.

As a Course Director for PADI, Larry shared his passion for scuba diving with countless people. He was especially devoted to training disabled Veterans to dive. He even had the honor of taking a group of disabled Veterans to Fiji to dive and film with the Cousteau Society aboard the Calypso.

Larry had the remarkable gift for turning a chance encounter into a lasting friendship. He had a deep passion for the Scouting program and a fervent dedication to missionary work. He was a true disciple of Jesus Christ, seeking out, serving, and caring for those in need.

For the past 48 years, Larry and Faye have called Bountiful home and have been faithful members of the 37th Ward. Throughout his time in the ward, Larry embraced many callings, most recently dedicating his time as an ordinance worker in the Bountiful Temple. His legacy is one of love and unwavering faith, leaving a mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Elwin and Letitia Garlock and his sister, Laurine Jacobs. He is survived by his wife Faye Garlock, his sister Betty Stebbing, children Annie (Alan) Call, Brian (Kathie) Garlock, John (Jenny) Garlock, Amy (Esteban) Uboldi and Matt Garlock. 18 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
