Larry Keith Shepherd

October 8, 1935 — January 6, 2022

On Thursday, January 6, 2022, Larry K. Shepherd, loving husband, father and family patriarch, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Larry was born on October 8, 1935, to Bartley and Maud (McGovern) Shepherd in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the eighth of their ten children. His early years were spent in Bountiful, Utah where he attended Stoker School. In 1947 the family relocated to Medford, Oregon. There he met his eternal companion, Nadine Thorsen, and they married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 19, 1955. Together they raised six children and at his passing his posterity includes 24 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

After graduating from Medford High School, Larry served a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Army. Athletically, Larry was strong, quick, and smart and in 1956 he won the 4th Army wrestling championship in his weight class. While in the Army, Larry attended electronics school which provided the basis for his early career. After separating from the Army, Larry worked in electronics and aerospace manufacturing in Southern California and spent seven years in Las Vegas as an electronics and communication technician at the Nevada Test Site. Acting on a long-held desire to return to Utah, Larry moved his family first to Salt Lake City and a year later to Farmington while he worked selling and servicing office equipment. At 41 years of age, Larry began working for Albertson’s Distribution Center and rapidly moved into management positions through his hard work and ability to motivate younger laborers. He would stay with Albertson’s until retirement. Meanwhile, with their children grown, Larry and Nadine moved to Bountiful where they remained until his death.

Larry loved his Savior, his family, serving others and hunting and fishing in the beautiful outdoors. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings including quorum presidencies, bishop, temple worker, and senior missionary. There was a special fondness in his heart for time spent as a scouting leader, combining his passion for the outdoors with the opportunity to help shape the lives of young men. He was truly in his element blazing a mountain trail of his own or with a rod and reel in his hands.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and all but one of his siblings. He is survived by his wife Nadine; his sister, Lola Powell; his children, Roberta (David) West; Susan (Jim) Bouwhuis; Julie (Chris) Hadley; Larry Jr. (Janee); Glenda (Don) Clark; Dean; and his growing posterity.

The family expresses gratitude to the caregivers who provided loving, tender care and necessary support during Larry’s final years including the US Veterans Administration, Caregiver Support Network and the staff at The Villas at Baer Creek. The family also thanks the Bountiful 12th Ward family for countless acts of selfless service and Christ-like love provided to Larry and Nadine.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, in the chapel of the Bountiful 12th Ward meetinghouse, 1476 North 300 West, Bountiful, UT 84010.   Public viewings will be held on Monday evening, January 10, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, UT 84010 and Tuesday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.   Interment- Memorial Lakeview Cemetery.
