Leland Gustave Stenquist

March 1, 1932 — December 17, 2019

Leland Gustave Stenquist, 87, passed away on December 17, 2019, in Layton, Utah.  Leland was born on March 1, 1932, in Tremonton, Utah.  He is the son of Gustave Albin Stenquist and Anna Margareta Sedell Stenquist, who were Swedish immigrants.

Leland grew up on his parents’ family farm in Tremonton, Utah.  He always loved working the soil and working with horses.

Leland attended school in Tremonton.  He graduated from Bear River High School in 1950.  In high School he was on the swim team where he took 2nd in state in the backstroke.  He then went on to graduate from BYU in 1954 with a degree in Elementary Education.  While attending BYU, and as a new school teacher, he served in the National Guard.

Leland married Carilyn Manning, his high school sweetheart, on May 26, 1954, in the Logan Temple.  Together, they raised 5 boys, 2 girls, and opened their home to 3 young men, from the Indian Placement Program, over the course of several years.

Leland worked as a teacher and educator for 30 years.  Part of that time, he worked for the Utah State Office of Education, however, his real love was teaching in the classroom.  He served many students in the 5th and 6th grades.  Many former students considered dad to be a wonderful, compassionate and devoted teacher.

Dad always had a beautiful garden on his farm in which he grew wonderful food and flowers.  He shared these things with family, friends and neighbors.  He also had livestock which he loved and cared for.

Leland was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life.  He served in many church callings and at the Ogden Temple. Later, he served with Carilyn at the Bountiful Temple.  Dad loved working on genealogy.  He and his wife, Carilyn, served missions in England and Sweden.

Leland was known to be a man of exceptional integrity who was well respected and will be deeply missed. He had a strong work ethic; he generally worked from sun-up to sun-down.  Leland was a man who had a great deal of empathy and cared more about others than himself.

Leland is preceded in death by his parents, Gustave and Greta Stenquist, his brothers, John (Anna Birgit), Richard, Duane and Erick (Ethel, living).  He is survived by his wife, Carilyn Manning Stenquist, and his children, David (Adele), Anna Margaret Grow (Dennis), Leland (Allyson), Paul (Gay), James (Kathryn), Julie Coleman (Brian), Allen (Janis), many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 6, 2019, at 11:00 am, in the Kaysville Gailey Park Ward located at 331 South 50 West, Kaysville, Utah.  Family and friends may visit with the family from 9:30 to 10:30 before the service.
