Leland Wayne Redd, Jr. 1920-2009

BOUNTIFUL – Leland Wayne Redd, Jr., 89, beloved and revered husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend passed away peacefully on Friday, September 18, 2009. Wayne was born to Leland Wayne Redd, Sr., and Suzanna Hunter Redd on April 28, 1920 in Blanding, Utah. His mother died when he was two years old. His father later married Alice Hunter, a sister to his biological mother. Allie was the mother that raised him and loved him as though he were her own son. Wayne had an adventure filled youth. He rode a horse to a two-room school house. He had a bear and a deer for pets. He spent his summers herding sheep in the mountains of Colorado. He learned to love his pioneer ancestry. His adventuresome outlook has led him to pursue hobbies in white-water rafting, skiing, scuba diving, world traveling, gardening, and genealogy. He was a real student of history and he loved to read. He has written personal histories about himself and his ancestors – so that future generations can know about the interesting people that came before them. He is a descendant of Jens Nielsen – a Hole in the Rock Pioneer and like Jens; he had lots of &qoute;stickity-to-it&qoute;. Wayne served an L.D.S. mission to South Africa. At the beginning of World War II he was transferred to the Northern States Mission. During a lifetime of faithful church service, he has served as a Counselor to the Bishop, Bishop of the Val Verda 2nd Ward, Counselor to the Stake President of the Val Verda Stake, and diligent home teacher. Wayne attended the University of Utah and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After college he served as a Naval Officer during World War II in the Pacific arena. He spent over 20 years in consulting engineering. He was involved in the construction industry. He was a partner in Nelson Brothers Construction Company and was a founder of ForShor Company. He married his sweetheart, Kathleen Horsley, on February 3, 1949 in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. They have been married for 60 years. They have seven children. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, children Jayne Kearl Martin, Claudia Sandberg Mark, Lee Redd Kathy, Steven Redd, and Thomas Redd. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughters Patrice Redd, Suzanne Fry, and son-in-law, Lee Fry. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at the Val Verda 9th Ward, 3317 South 800 West, Bountiful. A viewing will be held Monday evening, September 21, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main and on Tuesday morning from 10:30-11:30 at the church prior to the services. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints.
