Lena Belle Hollenbaugh Liggett Roskelley

May 8, 1921 — December 9, 2015

Lena Belle was called home on December 9, 2015. She was attended in death by her family in Pleasant View, Utah.

Born on May 8, 1921, in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, to James H. and M. Maude (nee Leamasters) Hollenbaugh, she was the second of 10 children. Her family lived in the Fountain Square area of Indianapolis. They were introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the late 1930s, and Lena joined the Indianapolis Branch, later the Indianapolis First Ward, in 1939.

She married Donald G. Liggett on June 21, 1941, and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake temple on August 10, 1959. Lena and Don raised four children together, taking their family across the world on various assignments with the United States Air Force. One of her fondest memories included living at Johnson Air Force Base in Sayama, Saitama, Japan. Lena was widowed on November 15, 1958, after Don died in service while stationed at Hill Air Force Base. After a short move to New York, Lena returned with her children to Indiana and settled in the Beech Grove area.

A living embodiment of the widow's mite, Lena dedicated her life to loving and serving others. She enjoyed raising her children near the influence of her family. During this time she developed an interest in recording family history, often taking her children to trace gravestones at local cemeteries. In 1970, she began serving as a dorm mother at Brigham Young University, and remained in this position until she journeyed to Germany in 1975. She spent a year abroad uncovering her Bavarian ancestry. Her unwavering dedication to raising her four children as a widow has served as a strong influence through multiple generations of her family.

Widowed for 27 years, she married F. Wayne Roskelley for time in the Washington D.C. temple on July 19, 1986, and they settled in Bountiful, Utah, in 1989. They enjoyed serving together in the Salt Lake temple, participating in the Sons of the Utah Pioneers, and tending their garden.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, sisters Jewel Hollenbaugh and Laura Peterson, brothers James Hollenbaugh and Glen Hollenbaugh, son F. Douglas Liggett, and grandchildren Joseph Michael Copas and Jennifer Dawn Liggett. She is survived in death by 5 siblings, 3 children Dennis B. Liggett (Muriel), Debra E. Copas (Bill), and David B. Liggett (Cindy), 18 grandchildren, and 43 great-grand children.

Services will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful 36th Ward Chapel, 102 East 1400 South. Friends and family may call on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main St., or on Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
