Lenard Roland Howe, 89, passed away June 20, 2009 at his home in Bountiful, Utah. He was born September 3, 1919 in Provo, Utah to Leonard Jackson Howe and Mary Belle Theodora Taylor. He married Lorena Jean Duke on May 6, 1949 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Roland and Jean have six children, Stephen Roland Howe Terrie, Oconomowoc, WI; Gary Lyman Howe Caroline, Cedar City, UT; Denis Lenard Howe Terri, Scottsdale, AZ; Mark Taylor Howe deceased; Kent Duke Howe deceased; and RoJeanne Howe Doug Smith, Centerville, UT. Roland grew up in the mouth of Daniels Canyon, UT where he and his four siblings rode Shetland ponies to the three-room Daniels School. After graduating from Wasatch High School, Heber, UT, he went on to graduate from the National Trade School in Los Angeles, CA. A year later he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in the American, Pacific Asian, and the European Theaters of WWII, and later in the Korean War. His post-military, professional career included owning a welding business in Heber, UT, a machinist in Wendover, UT for four years, and an industrial engineer for the Sperry Rand Corporation and for the U.S.A.F. at Hill Air Force Base, UT. He retired in 1985. Of all his occupations, his favorite was that of a machinist where he could meticulously shape metal into meaningful parts. In a similar manner, he shaped the lives of many grateful young men when he served as a scout master on four separate occasions. He was an active part of the Boy Scouts of America where he personally earned over 40 merit badges, and was a proud recipient of the Eagle Scout Award and Silver Beaver service award. He was excited when all of his eligible sons and 11 of his grandsons also became Eagle Scouts. He was an active member of the LDS church and served faithfully, as Young Men’s President, counselor in three bishoprics, a member of the High Council, canning and home storage supervisor at the Stake Dry Pack facility, and a devoted home teacher. Roland and Jean were missionaries in Sydney, Australia where Roland was a Branch President in two branches. They also served for four years in the Salt Lake Temple. He loved the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He dedicated his life to his wife and family and in serving others. He loved people and enjoyed telling jokes where his contagious laugh often invoked more laughter than the joke itself. He is survived by his wife, Jean, who served faithfully at his bedside. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. John D. Howe, St. George, UT, four children, 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the kind and loving care he received from friends, neighbors, and Applegate Hospice.
