Leon K Johnson, 88, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2015 in his home in Bountiful, UT of causes incident to age. He is survived by Iris Kartchner Johnson, his wife of nearly 66 years. He is also survived by his children, Hugh (Donna) of Kansas City, MO, Rexine (Malcolm) Munk of Colorado Springs, CO, Marcinda (Tom) Mohr of Stockton, UT, Sidney of Bakersfield, CA, Jeffrey (Shelly) of Bountiful, UT, Tyler (Kim) of Layton, UT, Kevin (Jeannie) of Victorville, CA, Sarena (Dwight) Rogers of Las Vegas, NV, Terry (Penny) of Cedar City, UT, Colleen (Mitchell) Peterson of Bountiful, UT, Annalyn (Evan) Davis of Santaquin, UT, and Jennifer (Scott) Larson of Waverly, IA. Leon and Iris have 61 grandchildren and 93 great-grandchildren. Leon is also survived by his sisters, Norma Patterson and Glenna (Bruce) Stevens, both of Blanding, UT. He was preceded in death by four siblings, Sylvan, Keith, Donna, and Carl, an infant son, Sylvan, an adult son, Harvey (Nancy) of Cedar City, UT, and three infant grandchildren.
Leon was born October 19, 1926 in Cortez, CO and lived there until the family moved to Blanding, UT. He graduated from San Juan High School in Blanding and attended Dixie College in St. George, UT until entering the US Army near the end of WWII. He was among the first troops to serve in the military occupation of Japan after the war. After his military service, Leon served a Japanese-speaking mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Hawaiian Islands.
Leon and Iris met and fell in love in Blanding, UT, and were married on June 15, 1949 in the Salt Lake City Temple, after which Leon attended LDS Business College.
They lived in Colusa, CA for over 20 years and in Cedar City, UT for over 20 years. After Leon retired, he and Iris served a Spanish-speaking mission for the Church in the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of Africa. Shortly after their mission, and after recovering from a terrible, life-changing automobile accident, they moved to St. George, UT, where they lived for 16 years. They have lived in Bountiful in recent years.
Leon was fun-loving, and had a keen sense of humor. He loved playfully teasing family members, especially the children. He loved music and enjoyed gardening. Leon was full of integrity, and possessed exceptional tact. He was a good, hard-working, caring and considerate man, loved and respected by all who knew him. The family wishes to thank Heritage Place Assisted Living and Envision Home Health Care and Hospice for their loving care.
Visitation will be on Thursday, April 23, at 9:30 AM in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 1250 South Main Street, Bountiful, UT. The funeral will follow at 11:00 AM in the chapel. A graveside service and interment will be on Friday, April 24 in Blanding, UT.
