Lola Hodgson Holbrook passed away March 14th at her home in Bountiful, Utah, at the age of 86. She was born in Syracuse, Utah to Lawrence and Vera Briggs Hodgson on November 22, 1925. She was the third of five children. She was raised on the family farm learning the skills of a farmer’s daughter – milking cows, driving tractors, planting and harvesting the garden where she acquired a great work ethic lasting her entire life. Lola was a graduate of Davis High School in 1944. She was always one of the prettiest and most talented girls in all of Davis County.
Lola caught the eye of a young-man from Bountiful, Reid Rampton Holbrook, at the Clearfield Cannery. They briefly dated before Reid’s three year LDS mission, to the Eastern States and corresponded during his mission. Following Reid’s return, they fell in love as Reid was preparing to now serve his country. After a two week engagement, they were married in the Salt Lake City temple on January 11, 1945 while Reid was on furlough.
Very soon after their marriage, Reid left to serve in World War II as a Paratrooper. Upon his return home from the war they settled in Bountiful and started their family. At the age of 31, Reid was called to serve a second LDS mission in western Canada. Remaining home in Bountiful, Lola cared for their two small sons. Upon his return, their family soon increased by two very unique and special children – Kim and Lynette. In 1969, Reid was provided the opportunity to pursue a second master’s degree at UC Berkeley; again Lola remained home supporting their family.
Lola’s unwavering love and commitment for her family is best reflected in the loving care that she provided for the cherished special spirits of Kim and Lynette for over 55 years until the age of 84. It was her nature to always put herself second.
Neighbors and friends were an important part of Lola’s relationships. As a young married couple they joined a study group that has lasted over 65 years and is still going strong. This is a true testament to their friendships. Neighbors were friends forever! Lola’s continued love of flowers and gardening was a life-long joy. Everyone shared in the beauty of her flowers and the prolific yield of her garden. She continued to preserve her harvest, well into her 80’s. A Christmas gift that all looked forward to was her terrific home-made chocolates and candy.
Lola loved the gospel. She served each calling with vigor and commitment. She always served others and went out of her way to build relationships and eternal bonds. She loved them, they loved her. She served as Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society Counselor, in the Primary Presidency, Teacher, Visiting Teacher and Temple worker in both the Salt Lake City and Bountiful Temples.
Lola was preceded in death by her husband (Reid), parents, brother (Roy), and sister (Doreen). She is survived by her four children: Reid Scott (Joy), Heber City; Val Hodgson (Bunny), St. George; Kim Brent, Farmington; Lynette, Farmington; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Shirma Waite (Golden) Syracuse; Velma Criddle (Howard), St. George. Her journey on earth was filled with examples of love, patience, tolerance, understanding and compassion. Lola was one of our Heavenly Father’s special children. Our lives have been graced by this angel on earth, our Mother, Lola Holbrook. We love you – and your pickled beans!
