Loren Dale Martin
1940 – 2017
Loren Dale Mart in, 76, surrendered to Alzheimer’s Disease and passed away June 28, 2017. The exceptional and devoted care he received from his loving wife and eternal companion extended his happiness and well-being in the last years of his life. It was almost 59 years ago when he saw her across the room at an Institute social at the University of Utah. She smiled at him, and the rest is history.
Loren was born September 17, 1940, in Santa Ana, California, to Leno Baird and Jeradean Pritchett Martin. Loren grew up in Utah and California, living in Orem, East Mill Creek, and Orange. He attended Orange High School for two years, but graduated from Olympus High School in 1958 after moving back to East Mill Creek. The untimely death of Loren’s dad, when he was 15, left a void and scar that remained throughout his life. He adored his mother, and always talked about his dad with the highest regard.
After attending the University of Utah for two years, Loren was called to serve a two-year mission for the LDS Church to the Southern States Mission. His sweetheart, Marilyn Monson, whom he had met the first year of college, waited for him during his mission and they were married August 5, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple. Loren studied political science before entering law school, and completed four years of Army ROTC. After graduating from the University of Utah Law School in 1967, he served two years active-duty in the Army as a Signal Corp officer, First Lieutenant, stationed in Germany. Loren was an FBI Special Agent from 1970 to 1972, assigned to Oklahoma and Kansas. They returned to Utah, and settled in Bountiful. His legal profession spanned more than three decades including various positions with the Davis County Attorney’s Office, as well as the Davis County Attorney from 1984 to 1986, and his own private practice in Salt Lake until 2005. He was very involved with the Republican Party, and campaigned for several different public offices, including Utah Attorney General in 1976. He also enjoyed two stints as a radio talk show host on the side.
Loren was a brilliant man who enjoyed learning. His understanding of the scriptures led him to write a book on Isaiah and offer lectures. He also wrote legal reference books, scriptural essays, poems, and even an unfinished fictional novel. Other hobbies he enjoyed were singing in the ward choir and stake musicals, yardwork, and building things. His projects were known to be well designed, sturdy, and sometimes intricate. It wasn’t always about project completion, as his yard projects often took years. He loved working on projects with his children, building or fixing things. Loren was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a High Priest and served in many different callings. His favorites were High Council, Temple Worker, and youth Sunday School Teacher. Loren was quick to share his testimony and enjoyed having deep conversations. He was kind, sensitive, loyal, honorable, faithful, and a bit of a crusader. Loren’s pride and joy was his family, and he would do anything to help them.
He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn; their 7 children Robert Loren (Wendy), David Dale (Sonda), Thomas Spencer (Aleyce), Richard Leno (Wren), Holly Lynn (Rob) Barker, Melanie Jane (Kevin) Banner, Laurie Ellen (Rob) Taylor; 33 grandchildren; and siblings Larry (J.C.), Linda (Monte) Smith, Keith (Trisa), Wilson (Wendy). Preceded in death by his parents, and one grandson.
