Lorin Douglas Green

L. Douglas (Doug) Green peacefully returned to his Heavenly Father June 20, 2018 in Ogden, Utah at the age of 80. Doug was born on May 5, 1938 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lorin Charles Green and Helen Hilton. Growing up, Doug always had a desire to serve his country and have a big family. While attending East High School, he met and fell in love with Patricia Jones who would faithfully stand by his side and allow him to achieve both goals. They were sealed together June 7, 1960 in the Salt Lake City, Utah LDS temple. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah after studying history and Naval Science. He was commissioned to the United States Navy June 6, 1960.

Doug answered the call to serve his country for 22 years of combined active duty and reserve service during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam War and the Cold War. He started his Navy career as a “Tin Can Sailor” in the USS SPROSTON (DD 577) based out of Pearl Harbor HI. From there he was selected for submarine service and subsequently graduated from Submarine Officer course in Groton, CT. After graduation, he was stationed on the USS TANG (SS 306), USS JAMESTOWN (AGTR 3) and the USS IWO JIMA (LPH 2) and a NATO tour during the Iran hostage Crisis. After his active duty time Doug transferred to the Navy Reserve where he was promoted to the rank of Commander and worked as a civilian employee for the federal government at Hill Air Force Base and the Utah National Guard.

Doug was most notably known among his friends and neighbors for his love of the outdoors and God’s creation. Doug spent his time around the house ensuring his home had beautiful landscaping and was always undertaking some sort of DIY home improvement. He was very active as an adult in the Boy Scouts of America, and actively enjoyed biking, hiking, rock climbing, ice climbing and dutch oven cooking well into his senior years. He passed his knowledge of these activities to countless young men.

Doug served a mission for the LDS Church with his wife Pat as his companion to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center from 2003-2005 where he got to serve young Navy recruits as they began their Navy careers.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia J. Green, children Deborah Stoker (Trent), Katherine Edgar (Alex), Steven D. Green (Holly), Diane Lund (Russell), Christopher J. Green (Emily), and Jennifer Brown (Jason), 22 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and his sister Margaret Eaton. He is preceded in death by his sons Robert D. Green and John M. Green (JaNene), his parents, and his siblings Dwayne Green (May) and Lynda Hales (Gary).

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 29, 2018, at the Bountiful 2nd Ward building, 650 South 200 East, Bountiful, Utah. Friends and family may visit Thursday, June 28, 2018 between 6 and 8 p.m. at Russon  Mortuary at 295 N. Main, Bountiful, or Friday, 9:45 to 10:45 at the church just prior to the funeral.  Interment will be at the Lakeview Memorial Estates Cemetery with Military Honors, 1640 E. Lakeview Dr., Bountiful. 

We, the family, would like to express our gratitude to the staff at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home for the excellent care they provided Doug in the last months of his life. It gives us comfort to know he was constantly treated with respect, compassion, and love.
