Lorna Rae Jones was born August 21, 1940, to Lowel and Verna Smith in Dennison, Texas. Lorna was the oldest of three children. She grew up in many small towns in Utah and Idaho. She attended Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah. She met Ron while working at Hot Shoppes and they dated and were married in the Salt Lake City Temple December 15, 1960.
After trying to have children for 5 years, they were delighted when they got a call from LDS Hospital that there was a beautiful little girl waiting for them, Susan. 13 months later came Lisa, then 18 months later Melissa. After another 3 years, Jennifer joined the crew.
Mom and Dad lived in Salt Lake City for the first few years of their marriage, but moved to Detroit with Marriott and continued to move all over the east coast: King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; Gaithersburg, Maryland; Reston, Virginia; Rockville, Maryland, etc.
Mom had always made friends easily and made some lifelong friends along the way. In 1981, the Jones family made its trek back to Utah where her children were able to attend school.
Their stint in Utah was short-lived. Ron moved the family to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a year, then Glendale, California, for another year. Their last stop was back in Washington, DC, before returning to Bountiful, Utah. There they lived in the Maple Hills Condominiums for 31 years. Lorna began serving in the Bountiful Temple the year it opened and continued until COVID changed everything.
Mom was always known as the intelligent, fun, energetic and always the most cordial and kind to all: Ron’s business associates, neighbors, her children’s friends, and the very special people that she was able to serve in her church callings.
She loved to travel and as Ron worked for Marriott, they took full advantage and traveled around the world for many years. She was an avid hiker and tennis player until she was struck with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. She survived an almost insurmountable journey and came out on top.
Although her quality of life was greatly diminished, she continued to love and serve in the temple and especially her family for as long as she possibly could.
Mom served six amazing months in the England, Manchester Mission where she made lifelong friends before her diagnosis and return to the states.
Our mom was a beautiful mother to her four daughters. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker and when made a grandmother, she was the very BEST! Her 16 grandchildren adore her desperately. She has attended every special event in their lives and leaves such a beautiful legacy of love and service.
Mom was the standard: as her daughters we will always strive to carry on her traditions of love, sacrifice and service. While we have lost our beautiful matriarch, heaven has gained their favorite angel. Until we meet again…
Lorna was preceded in death by her brother Wade, her mother, Verna, her father, Smitty, her husband Ron, and Michael Scott, her oldest grandson.
She is survived by Sue and Lou Arellano, Lisa Montrose, Melissa Turner and Todd Turner, Jennifer Jones Tooley and Jason Tooley and fifteen of her grandchildren and 5 almost 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Linda Kay Smith
