Beloved Lou Jean Scoffield Packer passed from mortality into eternity on Tuesday January 10, 2017, in Bountiful, Utah, of causes incident to age. She was married to Brigadier General Leon C. Packer and was mother to Beverly Johnston (David), West Linn, Oregon, Carolyn Toronto (John), Farmington, Utah/Independence, Missouri, Dr. Douglas L. Packer (Janet), Rochester, Minnesota, and Robert N. Packer (Shelley), Lafayette, California/Madrid Spain. Jean was the grandmother to 24 wonderful grandchildren and 76 great grandchildren.
She was born in West Point, Utah on October 20, 1925, the first child of Syvil James and Louisa Thurgood Scoffield. Brothers and sisters include Carol Petersen, James C. Scoffield, Rosa Lee Sill, and William T. Scoffield. Jean spent her early years in Northern Utah and Southern Idaho surviving the Great Depression and later World War II. She graduated from Ogden High School and later Weber College. While at Weber, she served as a student body officer. It was at Weber during a Veterans Day program, that she met Lt. Col. Leon C. Packer USAF who had only recently returned from Europe. They were married the following year on October 24, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple and established their first home in Washington D.C. where Leon was stationed at the Pentagon. In 1947, Leon and Jean returned to Utah, established their permanent home in Brigham City, and began work at the family business, Packer Motor Co. Jean cooked, canned, sewed, quilted, knitted, crocheted, cross stitched, gardened, and skied her way through life. She served in the Primary Organization of the LDS Church in Ward and Stake callings for most of years in Brigham City and loved it. Jean scored dozens of Multi-State AAU Swimming meets held in Brigham City, threw thousands of baseballs, made hundreds of picnics, played hours of Monopoly, made dozens of costumes, and helped with immeasurable amounts of homework. She was the Box Elder County Mother of the year. Following retirement, Leon and Jean served a faithful LDS mission as Directors of the Mesa Arizona Visitors’ Center at the Arizona Temple.
After the 1985 passing of her caring husband Leon, Jean moved to Farmington, Utah. She continued to serve by volunteering at the Beehive House, at the Church Office Building, and as an ordinance worker at the Bountiful temple. Through all the Brigham City and Farmington years, there was a steady flow of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren through her home. Her influence had a profound effect on their lives.
Jean spent the last months of her life at The Inn on Barton Creek in the care of a wonderful and much appreciated staff. Just as before, her home was the center of life for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and lifelong friends.
