Lucille Margaret Ferguson Mason

November 2, 1925 — April 11, 2022

Lucille Margaret Ferguson Mason, 96, peacefully graduated from this mortal life, Monday, April 11, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones, in Bountiful, Utah.  Lucille was born to Guy Lewis Ferguson and Annie Runella Wertz, on November 2, 1925, in Roanoke, Virginia. She was the oldest of three children.  During the depression, their family moved from Roanoke, Virginia to Ogden, Utah, and then again to Renton Washington.  They made great memories that Mom would share throughout her life.  Her early years were shaped by learning to work hard on a farm and in the orchards with her parents, her sister Eula and Brother Jim.

They returned to Virginia and Roanoke became her home until after she graduated from Andrew Lewis High School, Salem Virginia.   She met James Wayne Mason, while he was serving a Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, when she was 16 and he was 20.  They became good friends, writing letters for two years while he finished his mission, and two additional years while he served in the Air Corp, during WWII.  Wayne asked Lucille to marry him and meet him in Bountiful, Utah, his hometown, in June 1946.  She traveled by train from Virginia to Utah and began a beautiful adventure with James Wayne Mason.  They were married in the SLC Temple, June 14th, 1946.  Together, they had six children.

Mom loved to tell stories and her memory of every address she lived, schools she attended, teachers, memorizing poetry, and growing up during the depression, were some of the best.  She never felt like she lacked in any way.  She was a trooper!  We think the fact that some of her early years included having a bedpan under the bed at night (to prevent trips to the outhouse) may have shaped her attitude about camping with six rambunctious kids, although not her favorite pastime, she willingly packed the camper for every adventure and loved making memories with her family.  The annual cross-country trips to visit her family from Utah to Virginia, in a car packed with 5-6 kids are some of our family favorites.  No electronics to plug into, family entertainment at its best!

Mom’s life was filled with adventure, travel, service, hard work and a willingness to always help anyone in need.  She volunteered at Lakeview Hospital for 35 years with over 6066 hours of service.  She was selected for the Frist Humanitarian award for individuals who consistently go beyond the call of duty in serving patients and communities.  She didn’t slow down for most of her 96 years…. Only recently, she decided a cane might be necessary ‘for balance’.

She and Dad loved to cook together and for many years invited friends to dinner at their home.  She was an excellent cook, everything from scratch and enjoyed entertaining.  She loved setting a beautiful table, with china and crystal, because food tastes better on pretty dishes!  In the summertime, it was back-yard entertaining.  She was an avid gardener; her home and her garden were her pride and joy.  She was always after those ‘dandy-flowers’ that just kept coming up.  She marveled at the beauty of the earth and God’s plan.

Mom raised her family, teaching many lessons, one of the most important was that of hard work.  If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well.  She was an early riser and made sure the entire house was awake by declaring ’Rise and Shine – time to get up and get going!’  It didn’t matter what time we retired, she wanted us to enjoy the thrill of a new day.

She and Wayne were called to the Philippines, to serve as Missionaries in the Manilla Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1989-1991.  They made lifetime friends and loved serving.  Upon returning home, they continued the service in both the SLC and Bountiful Temples for 25+ years.  At 90 years of age, she was called to serve in the Relief Society Presidency, she said she was never too old to serve!

She made friends everywhere she went, if you were a stranger, it was never for long!

Mom would want you to know that she had a firm testimony of the Savior and loved the Prophets.  Her wish to be with her eternal mate, Wayne, has now been fulfilled and we are sure that she is now celebrating with Dad and all those that have gone before her and rejoicing in the reunion with loved ones.

Lucille leaves behind her children, Linda (the late Donald Arthur), Victor (Judy), David (Verlee), the late George (Marla), Patricia (Richard Tueller), Andrew (De Nise), 18 Grandchildren, 27 Great Grandchildren, her brother, Jim Ferguson (Joan) many nieces, nephews and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wayne, her parents, her sister Eula, her son, George Mason.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at the Bountiful 14th Ward Chapel, 1500 South 600 East, Bountiful, Utah.  A viewing will be held Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah and Tuesday morning from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment- Bountiful City Cemetery.
