Lucy Rae “Birdie” Seely Capel
1928 ~ 2017
Lucy Rae Seely Capel, passed away peacefully, on May 20, 2017, in Syracuse, Utah. She was born on June 14, 1928 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, to John Leo and Edna Lucille Rolph Seely. Lucy was the seventh and youngest child and was adored by her family. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death: Robert Leo, Ina (Frank) Morgan, Chesla (Pat) Patterson, John (Virginia), Edwin (Marjorie), Mark Rolph and Duskee. Lucy’s father gave her the nickname “Birdie” which she was called and known within the family throughout her life.
Lucy grew up in Mt. Pleasant, UT and graduated from North Sanpete High School in 1946. She attended and graduated from the University of Utah School of Nursing, receiving her BSN degree as a Registered Nurse. Lucy married the love of her life, Neal Conrad Capel, on June 9, 1950, in the Salt Lake Temple.
Lucy was a loving, nurturing and devoted mother of nine children – two girls and seven boys – Malcolm (Sue Ellen) Aurora, IL; Jeffery (deceased); Celeste Capel Farmington, UT; Jonathan (Briary) Bountiful, UT; Jocelyn (Todd) Weight Syracuse, UT; Christopher (Marilee) Greenwood, MS; Adam (Cari) Kaysville, UT; Winston (Noelani) Denver, CO; and Jason Capel, Draper, UT.
Lucy was an integral part of her 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren’s lives. Many vacations and summers were spent under her loving, fun and gentle care.
Lucy was a faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She loved and found great fulfillment within the church, family and community. Lucy and Neal served as temple ordinance workers for many years. Her life was a life of sacrifice, service and love to all. She always cared about the “individual” and made sure everyone she met was loved and cared for.
Lucy was an excellent teacher, dancer, and pianist. Though she was petite, she was a giant in her ability to love, serve and give of herself to those in need. She was a vibrant and beautiful soul inside and out. Words cannot describe how much she will be loved and missed. Her radiant and beautiful spirit will reside within the hearts and souls of everyone who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at 11:00 AM at the Val Verda 9th Ward, 3317 S 800 W., Bountiful, UT. A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:45 AM at the church. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery 200 N “E” Street, SLC, UT.
