Lyle Brown Grainger

Lyle Brown Grainger, age 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 10, 2018. He was born October 12, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the son of Delbert Joseph and Margaret Guyon (Brown) Grainger. He was the second child in a family of four children. He spent his childhood in the Salt Lake Valley moving with his family more than 15 times. He graduated from South High School and attended Utah Technical College and the University of Utah.

He married Marguerite Abigail “Gail” Shea in Our Lady of Lourdes Church on October 30, 1950. She preceded him in death in January 1965. They were the parents of six children. He married Suzanne Sloan on November 19, 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple, and together they had two daughters.

He spent much of his life in the grocery business starting his first job at Grand Central at the age of fourteen. He was a true merchandiser and had a unique gift for laying out a store. He was the owner of Grainger’s IGA as well as other stores in Utah and Idaho, and served as the president of the Utah Retail Grocers Association.

He had a beautiful tenor voice and took every opportunity to share it with others. He loved music and had an extensive collection of records, CDs, and even learned how to use a computer in order to save, categorize, and share his beloved music with everyone he came in contact with.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings over the years, his favorite being a faithful home teacher.

He is survived by his loving wife and sweetheart of 53 years, Suzanne; children, Julie (Robert) Hogge, Jim, Joseph (Peggy), David, Tish (Chris) Iund, Shelia (Terry) Downs, Lisa (Wayne) Peterson, and Michelle (David) Lewis; brother, Richard Grainger; 32 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, brother (William “Bill”), sister (Janet Bennett), and daughter-in-law (Stephanie Cude Grainger).

The family would like to thank Intermountain Hospice, especially his nurse, Karen (“Snow White”) and CNA, Lisa for their dedicated and loving care, as well as the many friends, neighbors, and extended family members who visited and expressed their love to Dad in his final days.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Orchard 2nd Ward Chapel, 3707 South 800 West, Bountiful, Utah. A viewing will be held Thursday evening at Russon Brothers Mortuary 295 North Main St., Bountiful, Utah from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., and Friday from 9:45 – 10:45 at the church prior to the funeral. Interment at the Bountiful City Cemetery.

Dad can best be remembered for his immense love of family, his wonderful sense of humor, the joy he found in music – especially Stan Kenton and the big bands, a good game of golf, searching for antiques, traveling the world, and for his generosity to others. Therefore, the family requests that donations be made to the Humanitarian Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in lieu of flowers.
