Lyle Chester Owen, born 1 September 1934 in Downey, Idaho to John Chester Owen and Lourine Gertrude Whitaker, passed away 15 October 2018. He married Merene Stephenson on 18 March 1958.
Lyle grew up in Downey and Gooding Idaho with a passion for sports and history that continued throughout his life. He served in the army, stationed in Alaska, during the Korean War following in a tradition of military service of his father and his brother Glade W. Owen.
Lyle received a Bachelor and a Masters Degree in education from BYU. He taught history and social studies at Valley Junior High School. He also worked at the Anderson Lumber Yard.
Lyle lived in Granger and Sandy, Utah and has lived in North Salt Lake (NSL), Utah since 1966. While in NSL, he was very active in community and church service. His service in the community included serving on the NSL Planning Commission. His church service included serving as Bishop of the Orchard 4th Ward and as a member of the Woods Cross East Stake Presidency. Lyle later fulfilled a goal and served with Merene as Church Education missionaries in Ohio from 2000-2002. Family was important to Lyle who attended all his children’s sporting events and programs.
Lyle was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers. Lyle is survived by Merene and his children Elizabeth Gebs (Bernhart) of Powder Springs, Georgia; Matt (Leslie) of London, England; Patricia of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Jerry Yazzie (Maria) of Springville, Utah. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 23 October 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at Orchard 4th Ward, 55 East 350 North, North Salt Lake, Utah 84054. You are invited to visit with the family on Monday, 22 October 2018 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 N Main Bountiful, or from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, 23 October 2018 at the Orchard 4th Ward Church.
