Lynn Kingdon Arbuckle, 83, passed away on Saturday February 10, 2024 due to congestive heart failure. Lynn was surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home in Kaysville, Utah and somehow found a way to be witty and make everyone laugh during his final hours.
Lynn is survived by his wife Cheryl and their six children: Jerilyn (Jeff) Norton, Jennifer (Dwain) Tilleman, Joel (Kathrine), Justin (Crystal), JaNae (Daniel) Wright, Jonathan (Jessica), 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, as well as his brother Kent (Maurine) and sister Ann (Greg) Burton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice Mann and Berniece Kingdon Arbuckle, his brother, Jim, and sister-in-law, Julie.
Lynn was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 16, 1940, the third child of four. He learned the value of hard work early in life, spending much of his youth working in his dad’s sheet metal shop in Woods Cross and on a small family farm in West Bountiful where they raised horses. Lynn often said he didn’t realize Labor Day was a holiday until he left home.
After graduating from Bountiful High School in 1958 Lynn joined the Army Reserves. He completed basic training in California and Missouri and shortly after received a call to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii, which began a lifelong love of missionary work and of the Polynesian culture and people. After returning from his mission to Hawaii, Lynn attended Brigham Young University where he studied sociology and met his sweetheart, Cheryl Hubbard, a beautiful farm girl from Soda Springs, Idaho. Lynn and Cheryl were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 14, 1964 and after graduating from BYU, they made their home in Bountiful and Fruit Heights, Utah where they built a life centered on family and faith.
Lynn was a gregarious, outgoing person who loved people. He was known as the life of the party and always tried to make people laugh with stories and jokes. He used this talent to start an independent insurance agency in Salt Lake City, which he loved owning and operating for over 40 years. After retiring from the insurance business, Lynn and Cheryl served as a missionary couple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hilo, Hawaii (2007-2009) which was a special experience for them. They also served for many years in the Bountiful Utah Temple.
Not long after serving as a missionary in Hawaii for a second time, Lynn began showing signs of some memory loss and was eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. While this disease made it difficult in recent years for Lynn to travel and serve in the church, he still enjoyed interacting with others and seeing if he could get a laugh out of anyone he came in contact with. Cheryl lovingly cared for Lynn every day and stayed by his side throughout his battle with Alzheimer’s. She often cited her and Lynn’s mantra “We decided on forever,” which helped her through this difficult time.
