Maida Jeanne Hutchinson Spjut

March 2, 1928 — August 5, 2024

Maida Jeanne Hutchinson Spjut (96): March 2, 1928-Aug. 5, 2024. Maida passed away on August 5, 2024.

Maida was born in Twin Falls, Idaho on March 2, 1928. She was the 3rd child of Dewey Hutchinson and Olive Annetta Crowley. She was educated in Idaho, California, and Wyoming where she was student body president.

She attended BYU. While working her way through college, she met her eternal sweetheart while working as a dental assistant in the Salt Lake Lab. They were married Aug. 26, 1949, in the Salt Lake City temple. Maida and Phil had 5 children. Maida helped support Phil through his graduation at the U of U before going on to dental school in Chicago for 4 years. Maida loved her Savior and served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Maida and Phil had many happy years in Lehi, UT, Northridge and Hesperia California. Then back to Bountiful, UT and Garland, UT.

People often say, “there are no strangers to Maida”, everyone is her best friend. She especially loved children and enjoyed her (14) grandchildren and (48) great grandchildren. Maida was proud of her Great Britain, European and Irish ancestry. She loved teaching her family about her pioneer heritage. All 9 of her grandsons served LDS missions in various parts of the world.

To her grandson’s- time with grandma meant fishing, hiking the red hills of St. George, board and card games. She was a very enthusiastic cheerleader, sometimes even embarrassing as you could hear her through a crowd. To her granddaughters they remember dressing in long gowns, and fancy jewelry and playing fairies in Grandpa’s magical forest with a waterfall and pond and flowers. She loved watercolor and has painted beautiful pictures.

Maida loved experiencing this delightful world, seeing wildlife, and marveling at God’s creations. One granddaughter stated she is “Maida Optimism!” I have never met anyone more optimistic than Grandma! She always saw the glass half full… And believed that it would just keep filling! She looked for the best in everyone and every situation!

What a legacy she has created for all her posterity… What an inspiration and a role model for us all!

Maida is survived by her children and their spouses: David Philip Spjut, SLC, Randal James Spjut, St. George, GayLyn (Russell) White, Tremonton and Lisa Marie (Craig) Carter, Morgan. Special daughter-in-law Kathleen Jensen (Russell), Kaysville. She and Phil are grandparents to 14 grandchildren, and 48 great grandchildren, (1 deceased).

Maida was preceded in death by her husband, Philip J. Spjut; parents, Dewey and Olive Hutchinson; son, Timothy Alan Spjut; brother, Roland Hutchinson; sister, Shirley Rannells; and great-granddaughter Scottie Lynn Carter.
